A whole teacher like me jumping fence?
May 13, 2022 6:10 pm
Good evening .
Trust your day is going well.
Yesterday, I told you about your external environment and how it affects your internal environment.
If you remember, I also told you that your mind (internal environment) works just like a computer, and that if you want to change what your internal environment is producing, you need to change what it is getting from your external environment.
And today, I said I was going to give you my own "two cents" advice on how to go about it,
Which I will do in a moment,
But first, I need to tell you this crazy story.
Yesterday, something funny happened to me.
It's funny how looking back, but it wasn't funny at all yesterday.
Funny enough, it happened right while I was writing yesterday's mail to you.
I was so surprised when it happened.
And quite frankly, I was disappointed in myself.
How could I have made such a mistake?
I had taken things too much for granted, and I was about to face the consequences,
I was so confused on what to do.
Here's how it all happened.
So, there I was at the school where I teach, after school hours.
As usual, I had a boatload of work to mark and I hadn't sent out my mail for the day.
Truth is everyday, I go through the struggle between teaching classes writing content and writing my daily mail to you.
Sometimes I begin writing them in the morning, and finish up after school hours.
So after I finished marking all that needed to be marked (which was around 5 - 6 PM), I picked up my phone, plugged in my earphone, played a song and began writing the mail.
I like to listen to music while I work, whether it's marking, writing, repairing phones, etc because it helps me focus.
While I was busy blasting my ears with some good music, I didn't know that I had been locked in the school compound.
Turns out the last teacher to leave was shouting my name to see if I was still around, but my ears were blocked.
"Mr Daniel!"
"Mr Daniel!!"
"Mr Daniel!!!"
I did not hear my name. Not even once.
After some time, I went downstairs to ease myself and came back.
That was when I noticed that the gate was locked and I couldn't see the padlock inside.
I got suspicious and went downstairs again to check if any teacher was still around.
Lo and behold, I was the only one left in the compound.
It took me a few seconds before I started fully realizing the situation I had gotten myself into.
I didn't want to call the HM because I knew that she would probably scold me for not hearing my name being called because I was using earphones.
So I called a teacher that normally holds the key to the gate aside from the HM.
3+ missed calls, no response.
I called another teacher who normally stayed long too to see if she was nearby so that she would help me collect the key and open the gate.
3+ missed calls, no response again.
At this point, different thoughts started racing through my mind.
"How will I get out of this compound now?"
"Ahhh!🙆🏽♂️"
"E don be for me o."
"Shey I will not jump fence bayi?"
"No! How can I do that?"
"A whole teacher like me jumping fence?"
"What will people say?"
"So I will sleep here like this?"
"What if 'ojuju' comes in the night to carry me?"
Lolz. 🤣
It sounds funny now,
But for those moments while it lasted, it felt scary. 😱😵
Eventually, after some more series of calls, the teacher picked up his phone,
Only for him to tell me that he wasn't with the key anymore and that I would have to call the HM.
"Kuku kill me na" 😭
"What will I do now?"
I decided to summon up courage to call her and I did.
Surprisingly and thankfully, she came from her house (which was not too far from the school by the way) and opened the gate for me.
That was how I was able to go home yesterday.
Here are some few lessons I want you to pick from this story.
1. Marketing lesson I: Sometimes, no matter how you market your products in the wrong place, it will fall on deaf ears or no ears at all.
If the teacher calling my name had come upstairs to call me, I would definitely have heard him.
Same vein,
You may have been marketing your product in a particular place, (your WhatsApp status for example) without making any sales.
This may be because your customers are simply not in your contact list, which means you are marketing in the wrong place.
If you want your marketing to work, you have to go to where your customers hang out or reside and market your product to them.
If you sell baby clothes for example, your target audience are women (nursing or expectant mothers).
Go to Facebook or Reddit and search for Women or Mothers groups and market your product there.
You are more likely to sell there than if you keep posting on your WhatsApp status everyday.
Got it?
Good.
2. Marketing lesson II: Language in marketing matters a not.
You have to speak the language of your target audience or your marketing message will fall on deaf ears just the same way the calls of my name yesterday fell on deaf ears.
Come to their level and make them feel you understand them, after which you can communicate the benefits of your product to them and then sell to them.
3. Life lesson I: Sometimes, when you are faced with a difficult choice in life, don't waste time worrying about what will happen when you make the decision.
Just do it and see what happens.
If it turns out well, good for you.
And if it doesn't, well, just take it like that.
That's life for you.
If I hadn't summoned up courage to call the HM, I would have slept in the school.
Imagine that..
Ughhh! 🤮
4. Life lesson II: Don't use earphones on both ears in public, and if you must, use a moderate volume.
Okay?
Good.
That's that about that.
Now, to my "two cents" on how to condition your internal environment for success by changing what it is getting from your external environment.
1. Review your network.
It has been well said that your network is your net-worth.
If the kind of people in your network (e.g friends and family) are having a negative effect on your mindset, limit your attachment to them..
Heck, cut them off if you can.
When you start doing this, they may say you are being proud, or you are too serious, or you are too focused on money. It doesn't matter.
What matters is that you experience personal growth and development.
2. Recreate your network.
Identify people who are where you want to be and follow them.
Those people who are the top didn't get there by mistake.
Study them, attend their meetings, conferences, seminars, etc if you can.
Ask them questions as often as you can when you know that you will get answers.
Sign up for their programs and buy their courses or products. This will give you the access to the them that you seek.
Volunteer to serve or help them when you can, and learn as much as you can from them.
All of these will profit you in the long run.
3. Create a Positive virtual network.
This is the same with what I just said.
The difference is that you are creating the network online.
Follow those set of people on their social media platforms, consume their content and learn from them as much as you can.
There are some set of people whose status I view on a daily basis because I learn a lot from them.
You should do the same too.
Those are the few things I have for you today.
I hope it has been helpful so far.
You have yourself a nice evening ahead.
To your digital success,
King Danisan.
