Why do you do what you do?

I ran across this question when filling out a YouTube creator survey.

Up until then, I had easy, even quick answers for all the questions.

This one made me stop and really think about my answer.

One thing that made it problematic is YouTube only let me select one answer from four options that too me all could work together.

Do I create to share my passion for creating with others❓Yes.

Do I create to educate (I prefer the word “teach”) people who watch my videos❓Yes.

Do I create to have a business that earns money on and off YouTube❓Yes.

Do I create to entertain whoever watches my videos❓Yes.

Unfortunately there was only a “none of the above” and not an “all of the above.”

A friend recently told me he feels "people create for one of two reasons - to make money or help people because they enjoy it". Personally I think it’s more of “and” than “or”. I can create to make money and help people because I enjoy it.

Deep down I create because The Creator gave me the gifts and the opportunities to create. Unfortunately, that is easy to forget when self-doubt and other unhealthy things creep in and rob your creative joy. Or when money becomes the only reason or...you get the point.

I love sharing and teach and entertaining and, not gonna lie, I like making money. Full disclosure, sometimes I may get those out-of-order, but for me it’s “and” not “or” or “pick one”.

Curious, which one would you pick?
