"Here is my secret.

It's quite simple:

One sees clearly only with the heart.

Anything essential is

invisible to the eyes."

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

"I have a problem."

It's not an unusual way for someone to approach me here.

She told me a story that happens so often.

"When I was young my mother and father divorced.

My mother married again and her new husband did not want to support children who weren't his own."

"Since our mother left us alone my sisters and I live together.

We try to all contribute and help each other."

One had a husband who went

out of the country to work.

He stopped answering her calls.

She's younger than my oldest daughter and has a baby.

Another sister's husband divorced her.

She doesn't look old enough to have a son old who's already in school.

And the last sister's husband disappeared.

He left her with two little boys.

Then she told me,

"The children in our house only eat one meal a day."

I didn't doubt it at all.

I had seen the children scavenging in our trash looking for food.

It makes sense why the boys fight other children for popcorn when they come to our house.

Or scrape the last drops of porridge from everyone's cups.

It hurts to think about it.

Little children should eat more than one meal a day.

The simple solution was to give them some food.

It's much harder to know how to heal brokenness and the holes that go deep down in the soul.

Only Jesus can heal the holes.

Only Jesus can show us

how to truly care.

I don't doubt at all that we're called to do the little we can.

Somedays it feels like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon.

I've read that caring deeply can leave bruises on the soul.

But bruises will heal.

I know the cost of turning our back on God's children would be so much higher.

"So we do not lose heart.

Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day... as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."

2 Cor. 4:16,18
