Praying for a future and a hope...

Schools in Kenya closed
on Tuesday.
They'll reopen some time after the upcoming election.
We invited our neighborhood children to come for porridge one afternoon last week.
Open-ended vacation may sound
like a child's paradise.
But for many staying home means they don't get the lunch they were served everyday at school.
Food prices are rising.
I've had more than one parent tell me they struggle to feed their families even one meal a day.
"We need to thank God for this food before we eat.
What else would you
like to pray for?"
I looked into the faces
of forty children.
Every single one had the beautiful marks that they are made in the image of a loving God.
What was He thinking when he
heard their voices?
More than one answered,
"The elections."
I wondered what about
the elections.
"Pray that there is no fighting."
Most of them hadn't been born when the 2007 post-election violence ravaged Kenya.
But they knew.
"I'm worried about my
grandmother and cousins."
another boy told me.
His relatives live in the capital city where innocent bystanders have been killed in elections before.
"Someday you'll be the adults."
I told them.
"Maybe you can remember then
what it's like
to be the children."
"You won't forget that all of us are made in the image of God."
We thanked God for the porridge.
We prayed for the peace of Kenya.
Someday little children who go around emptying the last drops of porridge from everyone's cups
will grow up.
Someday I hope they will never, ever forget that we are all made
in the image of a loving God.
