The world is much smaller than we think.

Hello and happy Monday!

You know how people say that the world is small? There's this thing about six degree of separation, where if you meet a random stranger on the street, there is most likely six (or less!) people separating you and them.

When you start working and being a part of the industry, this concept will be even more apparent.

Think about it.

As a fresh graduate coming out of university, you may feel like your network is so small. As you join the workforce and began to connect with colleagues and counterparts in other departments or organizations, you may realize that you share some sort of connection with them.

For most people, this may be through graduating from the same university or school (fellow alums) or knowing the same people (sharing mutual friends). In other cases, it may be from attending similar programs in the past or having relatives who knew each other.

With the six degrees of separation concept, it shows how vast your connections can be, even with the far-end, seemingly impossible or random connections.

Your network is much bigger than you think.

This concept really highlights the importance of cultivating your network and fully utilizing them to develop your career. The people that you meet at career fairs or events may be your potential future colleagues. The colleagues that you have now may be your referrals for your future jobs in the future. Your ex-classmate in university may know someone who can help to mentor you in your chosen career.

Similar to how LinkedIn will occasionally show posts from your 2nd and 3rd degree connections, you should strive to make use of them to learn about your industry, to gain advice and tips, and to stay updated with relevant news and trends.

As you strive to create authentic relationships with the people that you meet, you would realize just how small the world is and how much you have in common with the person you're talking to.

And, who knows, maybe you can also be the much-needed connector for someone else who is currently developing their own career!
