What you can learn from Superbowl Marketing

The Superbowl is such a huge moment for big brands and their advertising. Especially nowadays when our attention is so split, except for one day a year when Fox is hoping for a record-breaking 115 million viewers.


Personally, I'm one of the "I'm here for the snacks and the commercials" people and I will never miss a halftime performance.


But as a marketer, the Superbowl is so interesting. And as a business owner, here's what you can learn:


  1. Simple messaging is always better- Squarespace had a commercial that said from the beginning- Squarespace is a website that builds websites. Thank you, easy messaging, simple commercial, loved it.
  2. Pattern interuption- Tubi had a commercial that looked like someone was changing the channel- we immediatly started paying attention- only to realize it was the commercial. Very different from everything that was going on and got our attention. So easily too- don't overthink it.
  3. Influencer marketing and nastagia can help you relate to your audience. So many celebrities in Superbowl commercials- but not just anyone- strategically placed collaborations and storytelling that brings back memories and gets people talking.
  4. Sometimes it's better to build a platform and then use it wisely rather than worrying about selling- I'm talking about Rhianna and moment to fix her make up. She has the platfrorm- and now everyone is talking about her product. But guess who didn't have to talk about it...


And this is the bonus one that I personally love...Anheuser-Busch has had exclusivity rights on alcohol advertising since 1989 until this year. When asked why they decided to give it up, Alissa Heinerscheid, the vice president of marketing for Bud Light said it's "part of a “rebalancing” of investments". Brands are more focused on where their customers are all of the time-- New York times editor Lora Kelley says "Many plan interactive rollouts as well, seeking to engage viewers on TikTok and sports-betting apps around the game."


So just like the big brands- it might be time you take a look at Tik Tok.
