Dear ,

It's ironic that today of all days is the 'Darkest Day of the Year,' as it couldn't be sunnier here in North Central Iowa.

For those who can't quite conceptualize what the solstice means, this is a good illustration:

After tonight, the Earth will begin to tilt back the opposite direction. Many cultures have festivals around this time of year to celebrate the return of warmer weather.

This is a popular day for winter sowers to plant their first seeds, but many folks in my area are still planting the seeds for a successful holiday gathering. We're picking up the last of our presents and getting them wrapped. We're washing clean sheets for holiday guests and finishing the last of our baking.

For our house, that means Kringla, a tradition passed down from my grandmother's people. What's your holiday sweet of choice? Respond to this email to let me know.

Happy Holidays for all those who are celebrating!

And for all those who are struggling, hold tight. The light is returning.

Until next time,

Katie O'Keene ☆
