My Idyllic Billionaire?
As a thanks, here's a sneak peek at the very beginning of My Idyllic Billionaire.
Ruby Dean checked the time on her old battered Casio watch for the tenth time that minute. She was at the back of the coffee queue with only twenty minutes to board the train before it left the station. Departing not only the town where she’d made her life but also the whole life itself.
Ruby hadn’t made the choice to move back to her hometown lightly, but in the end the decision was the best one. This way she could escape without making a scene. She had a reason to return home, she wouldn’t just be skulking back with her tail between her legs. That didn’t make it any easier though.
The reason to return home was tucked under her arm, nestled down in her purse. A letter Ruby had received last week that had set this whole whirlwind move across country in motion. She could feel the weight of it through the bare skin of her arm. Not even needing to take it out of her purse and slide it back out of the thick glossy envelope to know what it said. Word for word, Ruby could recite the letter from a solicitor acting on behalf of her late mother.
Ruby Dean, it had said, following on from the meeting last week which you were unable to attend, your solicitor has drawn up the deeds of the property and it is now in joint names between yourself and Miss Sapphire Dean. We would like to offer our profuse apologies for this oversight and have enclosed a voucher for our services should you require them in the future.
Yours Mr Tony esq.
Ruby tucked her long caramel brown hair behind her ears and moved forwards one space as a harried mum and her three children walked off with a tray full of frothy milkshakes. To say the original letter last month had come as a shock was an understatement. Ruby’s mum had passed away nearly ten years ago when Ruby was only fifteen, and her sister seventeen. They’d been sent to live with an aunt and had both left for university as soon as they could. Their dad was uncontactable, and had been since they were babies. Little had ever seen said about him and their mum had thought that was for the best.
Growing up they made do, never wanting for love or attention, but their clothes were from the thrift store, and their food was basic but delicious. So neither Ruby nor Sapphire were expecting anything along the lines of an inheritance. Over the years Ruby had worked hard as a store manager and enjoyed her spending money wisely. Mostly.
And then, last month, the rug had well and truly been pulled out from under her feet. A letter from a solicitors had fallen onto the doormat of the single story home she shared with friends. Addressed to Ruby, stamped from a solicitors office in her home town of Inniswater Strand. Sorry, they had said, a mix up with the files during paper to digital transfer. By the time Ruby had finished reading the letter, her room mates had to assist her through to her bedroom and bring her a hot, sweet tea. It wasn’t just a mix up, a few thousand gone astray. This had been a catastrophic failure of the company Ruby’s mother had trusted to provide her daughters with not only ten thousand each on their twenty-first birthdays, but also a beach front property with land that she herself had recently taken on and kept from the girls as a surprise. And a surprise it had been. Just ten years too late!
So now Mr Tony esq. was in charge of the Dean account and was trying to placate the two sister the best he could. As a solicitor, Ruby imagined, he was best placed to know how much he could be sued for and was trying his best to cover his back. Ruby had no wish to make trouble, but that wasn’t always true of her older sister, Sapphire, who had attended the meeting with the solicitor with a list of questions as long as her lithe arms.
It had been easier for Sapphire to get to the meeting though, she still lived in Inniswater. Happily married with two adorable girls and a husband who worshipped the ground she walked on. Which wasn’t hard. Sapphire had been blessed with long limbs, dark glossy hair, and eyes of the clearest blue. Whereas Ruby’s hair was more burnt caramel than chocolate, and her eyes more sludge than clear. Ruby was pretty sure that’s why the boyfriend she had recently started seeing had decided that long distance wouldn’t work for him and broke up with Ruby the day after she received the letter. Thankfully he hadn’t known about the inheritance, just the impending move, as Ruby wondered if he would have stayed for the property.
Ruby sighed and shuffled forwards, edging her bags along with her feet. Ten minutes to go before the train left the station now, yet the queue for the hot drinks wasn’t going anywhere. Ruby checked her phone, a message from Sapphire filled the screen, letting Ruby know she was excited to meet her at their new house. She’d added a couple of rows of happy emojis and a few kisses that made Ruby’s pink lips curl into a smile.
She was excited too. Just feeling a little overwhelmed. When the ten thousand had dropped into her account mere days after the receipt of the first letter, Ruby hadn’t known what to do with it. She’d made another split second decision and the stress was no longer hers to worry about. But, she supposed, neither now was the money.
Ruby’s watch beeped the turn of the hour from her small wrist. Just five minutes left to go now. A woman who was now at the front of the little kiosk reeled off an order for a half shot, three-pump, skinny, no froth latte and the teenage server looked as put out as Ruby felt. She’d only dragged her three heavy bags that contained all her worldly goods to the coffee kiosk to try and give herself a bit of a boost in what was turning out to be a difficult morning, but so far it was adding exponentially to Ruby’s stresses. And all she wanted was a flat white.
With a sinking resignation that there was no time to wait for coffee, Ruby hoisted one of the bags onto her shoulder and started wheeling the others away from the queue and the hiss of the redundant milk frother. Ever the organiser, Ruby already had a bottle of water and a few snacks in her purse, they’d have to suffice. She trundled through the gates and lifted her belongings onto the train. Bumping herself and her bags down the narrow gangway, Ruby searched the backs of the tables for her allocated seat. At only two carriages long, this didn’t take too long. Luckily the train was empty. Just a few other passengers leaving the vibrant, warm, city to travel six hours across country to the small beach town where nothing ever happened.
Ruby found her seat and stored her luggage away before sitting, looking around the carriage at the handful of people. She wondered if they were leaving for good too, or if they would be back in a few days, memories of Inniswater fading as fast as their suntans. She couldn’t decide if she was jealous of them, or glad to be leaving. The whole turn of events had given Ruby no time to think properly about it, but she knew that when she had a moment of calm, the preposterousness of what had happened would hit her like a sledge-hammer. Until then, she was enjoying the cotton-candy feeling in her mind.
A whistle sounded on the platform and the train shuddered as it began it’s journey. A single tear tracked down Ruby’s cheek as set off on her journey. Back home, back to Inniswater, back to the life she thought she’d left behind.
