I want to take a moment to share the story behind this song. In late 2021, Jennifer Roberts approached me with a script to a play she was working on. The play revolves around siblings reuniting after years apart, exploring their relationship with their parents and the pivotal role that music played in their lives.
In the play, "Already Gone" is a half-finished song left by the siblings' late mother. The daughter discovers the hidden lyrics in a box of old belongings and completes the song during the course of the play. Towards the end of the production, the song is performed by the actors, serving as a powerful conclusion that resolves the conflicts throughout the play.
This song needed to capture both the mother's emotions towards the end of her life and the current state of the siblings at the play's conclusion. It acts as a messenger of deep sentiment and serves as a poignant reminder of the family's journey.
It's one of my favorite songs I've ever written.
The play is called "The Pennsylvanian" and was performed for the first time at Z Below in San Francisco, March of 2023.
