Small changes VS Big changes // Robotics Newsletter Vol 54

Hi,

We all go through some big changes in life with major events such as end of school, college, first job, move to a new city, getting in a relationship, getting married, etc. And some of them end up having positive life style habits.

For example for me after moving to US, because of the people around me, I am hiking way more than when I was India.

I recently moved cities within US. At my last place, I had a car. Here I don't have one so I ended up picking a place closer to work and am now walking ~2 miles a day.

When there is a major event, you get an opportunity to make big changes and it is easier to transition into them.

That being said, if you don't have a major event, it is difficult to make big changes. For example, starting to eat healthier. I think it is one of the top difficult change to make. I am so use to making maggii cause it is easier, faster and well tastier.

This got me thinking, how about I try small changes? For example, I started buying cut fruits and storing them in the front space of my fridge. With the cut fruits, I am making it easier cause I don't have the added step of cutting a big watermelon. (I think we have all been there - buying fruits and then throwing them when they go bad cause we didn't cut it). By storing it in front, I have had better success of consuming them over chips and biscuit (which I now store in the top most hard to reach cupboard). It is not perfect but it is definitely a small change that I have been able to incorporate towards eating healthier.

So how does this relate to Robotics? If you join a bachelors/ masters program, it becomes easier to learn Robotics and develop the skills. Same is true for Robotics competition at college level. Major event >> Big changes.

But what if you can't do that right now and you keep telling yourself you will study in the evening after college or after work? Well then try small changes. Tell yourself you will study a concept or try 1 leetcode problem a day. You can alsoo add some environmental changes - unless you solve 1 leetcode problem or watch 1 video of the online course, you won't watch netflix. One way to achieve this is having a timed password lock on netflix which someone else knows and they only unlock it after you show them the solved leetcode problem.

I know it sounds crazy. But sometimes intentions aren't enough to do the work you should be doing. Try it out :)

❤️ Things I am enjoying right now

📺 TV Show - Made in Heaven S2 - Indian show on Amazon Prime. It is about 2 wedding planners and how they tackle different difficulties of people getting married alongside their problems. I love how they have tackled and highlighted some real lie problems.

📲 App - TripIt - if you travel often this is a good way to have all your bookings in one place - organized by timeline.

💳 Credit Card - Amex Platinum - If you enjoy traveling and using credit card points to offset the travel expenses, this is a good card. The credits does offset the annual fee if you plan it out well.
