Interview Tips // Robotics Newsletter Vol 50

Hi,

When it comes job interviews, there are 2 questions that will always be asked:

  1. Tell me about yourself
  2. And a project

The first one is asked straight forward - tell me about yourself. The second one is sneaky. The interviewer can pick any project - from your school, internship, past experience or your side projects - and start asking you about it.

The tip is to use the first question to direct the second one. In your introduction mention 2-3 projects and emphasize the one that you are most proud of AND can talk at length confidently. It is a way to drive the interview in your favor.

This also goes to say - make sure you are preparing well to discuss the projects. Here are some questions you should be able to answer about your project:

  • What was the task and how did you achieve it?

  • Why did you do this project?

(Please don't say it was an assignment, talk about learnings. Eg: I implement the piano movers problem to learn about the working of A star planner)

  • How did you implement this?
  • What did you learn?
  • How would you do it differently?
  • What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
  • How efficient is this method/ algorithm?
  • What are the pros and cons of this method/ algorithm?
  • Why is the algorithm better than another algorithm?

❤️ Things I am enjoying right now

📺 TV Show - Suits - I am rewatching this show. The dialogues and confidence of main characters is what attracts viewers of this show. It is about a guy who gets hired as an associate at a law firm. He knows the law but hasn't gone to law school. He was kicked out in high school.

🌆 New York City - I had the chance to visit New York City over the weekend and loved it. Such a unique city in US. The rush, the crowds and the subway. I also got to learn about the history of the ball drop. Every year on new year, millions of people gather at times square to watch the ball drop at midnight. The event was create as a marketing campaign by New York Times. The first few years was fireworks but then the ashes from all the fireworks caused a problem so they switched to ball drop. Ball drop was a popular way to announce time in the past before our smart watches.
