New Year Resolutions // Robotics Newsletter Vol 112
Jan 01, 2026 6:01 pm
Hi,
Jan 1st is the time most of us make new year resolutions only to stumble after a few days. I have done it for years and failed miserably.
However, 2 months ago I started a resolution that is still going strong. Here is what helped -
- Make it super easy - the smallest step. For me it was to go outside and walk for 5 minutes. 5 minutes that is all I had to do. Didn't require change of clothes, or a huge time commitment.
- Once I was able to do it consistently for few days, I bummed it upto 10 min, then 15 min, 30 min and then 45 min. With each bump, the struggles come popping out and I managed them. It was easier because I was already in the habit of getting out for 5 min.
You see the first minute is always the struggle, but once you are in it, it is easier to follow through, you are already on the street.
Next struggle was it gets boring to walk for 30 or 45 minutes, so it was time to make it interesting. I tried audiobooks but didn't work. Then I found a podcast, I liked and it worked. Next I also started jogging for a few minutes and go back to walking when I can't catch my breadth.
There were times when I struggled and invited family members or friends to join me. Since I had a streak going, people knew I was committed and am struggling today so they were happy to help. I would say, "I have a 20 day streak going and I am struggling to go walk today.", the response most of the time would be, "We can't break the streak, I will go with you, let's go!"
I hope this technique helps you. Start with 1 goal that you can do for 5 minutes - 5 min of walk, 5 min of exercise, 5 min of coding, 5 min of interview prep, 5 min of studying, etc.

❤️ Things I am enjoying right now
📖 Book - The Next Conversation by Jefferson Fisher - I know of this author through IG. He is a lawyer who talks about how to communicate better. I just started this and already understand his first point - don't win the argument something most of us get pulled into.
📺 TV Show - Magpie Murders - a famous muder mystery writer is dead. Before dying he shares the latest manuscript with the last chapter missing. The lead (editor from the publisher) has to figure out who the murderer is. Here is the interesting part - the editor and the murder mystery are intertwined. Will she figure it out?
