Networking 101 // Robotics Newsletter Vol 56

Hi,

Networking is difficult and an important aspect for a successful career. Now the first step is introduction where generally people mention their name, title, company and a quick note on what they do.

To take the conversation further and help you network, here are 3 simple tips:

1. Have a set of generic question to find a topic to talk about. Examples:

  1. What are you currently working on?
  2. What does your typical day look like?
  3. What are some of the challenges you are facing?

The idea is to find something that you both can talk about.

2. When you are talking, talk in more than 1 sentence to offer multiple hooks.

Example: I am a Robotics Engineer at BDAI. << Conversation ender.

I am a Robotics Engineer at BDAI. I am on the software team that is helping build tools for developing robot applications. One of the tool is simulation in Isaac Sim. It is my first time using the software. I am amazed by its Physics Engine which can do amazing calculations and provide better computations especially for controllers. I am also frustrated by its lack of documentation and so it is taking longer than expected. << Multiple hooks to talk about - simulation software in general, Isaac Sim specifically, Controllers, role of simulators in controller, documentation, etc

The idea is to offer them multiple sub-topics within a topic that they might know about and can start talking to you about it.

3. It is okay to fail and move on.

You started a conversation with one person, it is not going anywhere OR you don't have anything in common OR you are nervous, leave and strike up a conversation with another person.

Here are something to say:

a. Great speaking with you, hope to stay in touch.

b. Nice meeting with you, I am going to go speak with more people.

c. I have to go to the restroom >> Great way to take a break if you are nervous.

Hope this helps and if you know someone who will find this helpful, do forward it to them OR refer them to my newsletter with the link at bottom.

👩🏽‍💻 Jobs (USA)

❤️ Things I am enjoying right now

📖 Book - My not so perfect life by Sophie Kinsella - This book has a combination of office politics and a person figuring out their life after being fired. The part I liked the most about this book is the office politics. I don't want to reveal the big plot twist but for me it was a great way to identify how someone can mistreat you because you don't know have high social IQ.

📲 App - Tripcoin - This came in handy to track my expenses on a recent trip.

💳 Credit Card - Bilt Credit card - if you pay rent in the US, you know it is one of your biggest expense and this card lets you pay rent and earn points without any fees. I was able to use those points to book multiple nights at 2 different Hyatt hotels in Bali. So do check it out. Here is a referral link.
