These big cats roam freely in the country's dense forests, making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

What are Havelis? Havelis are traditional mansions found in India, particularly in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. These grand structures are characterised by their intricate architecture, beautiful courtyards and lavishly decorated facades. Originally built by wealthy merchants and nobility, havelis reflect a blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles, showcasing the artistic and cultural heritage of the region. Each haveli tells a story of the bygone era, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

Did you know:
India is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Here are some fascinating animals you might encounter:
- Bengal Tiger: The Bengal tiger is the national animal of India and one of the most iconic species in the country.
- Asiatic Lion: Once found across Asia, the Asiatic lion now exists only in the Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat. They are slightly smaller than their African counterparts but no less impressive.
- Indian Elephant: These gentle giants are widespread across India, especially in states like Kerala, Karnataka, and Assam. They play a crucial role in Indian culture and religion.
- Indian Rhinoceros: Also known as the one-horned rhinoceros, this species is primarily found in Assam, particularly in Kaziranga National Park. They are known for their unique armour-like skin.
- Snow Leopard: In the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, the elusive snow leopard roams. Hemis National Park in Ladakh is one of the best places to try and spot these magnificent predators.
- Ganges River Dolphin: This freshwater dolphin is found in the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. It is an endangered species and a symbol of the health of these river ecosystems.
- Indian Wild Dog (Dhole): These social and pack-living carnivores are found in forests and grasslands across India. They are known for their distinctive whistling calls.
- Great Indian Bustard: This critically endangered bird is one of the heaviest flying birds in the world and can be seen in Rajasthan. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this species.
- Indian Leopard: As previously mentioned, these adaptable big cats are found throughout India, often in proximity to human habitats.
- Sloth Bear: Known for their shaggy coats and unique dietary habits, including eating insects, these bears can be found in forests across India. They are particularly noted for their habit of carrying their young on their backs.
- Red Panda: In the forests of the eastern Himalayas, particularly in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, the adorable red panda can be found. They are elusive and primarily arboreal.
- Indian Peafowl (Peacock): The national bird of India, known for its iridescent tail feathers and elaborate courtship displays, is a common sight in many parts of the country.
India's wildlife is as diverse as its culture, offering unique experiences for those eager to explore its natural wonders. Whether you're on a safari in search of big cats, trekking in the Himalayas for rare sightings, or exploring wetlands for bird-watching, India promises an unforgettable wildlife adventure.
The Snow Leopard is a dream animal for me to see in the wild, but, is outside of the distribution range of this trip. The tour "In search of the Mountain Ghost" by one of our partner operators would be one of the best possible chances to see this stunningly beautiful and elusive animal.
Best regards
Sean Lues
