It's St. Patrick's Day! Whether it’s wearing a shamrock, or simply something green, hunting for leprechauns, searching for those elusive four-leaf clovers, or finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, may your day be special.
When I was growing up, we always had a fun-filled time. Family and friends chose favorite green shirts, socks, neckties, hats – whatever suited the party mood. Grandma served “green beer” at the Pine Tree, the tavern she owned below First Avenue near the Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle and later at Irish Pat’s Saloon in Ballard. My uncle and his cronies frequently discussed painting the center stripe in the middle of the street ‘green’. They always claimed the leprechauns, or ‘little people’ did it after the fact. They knew nothing about it.
Enjoy the day and the time. Like my grandfather said, “This is when everyone is either Irish, or wish they were!”
If you want to make “green beer” like my grandma did, all it takes is green food coloring in the bottom of the glass or the pitcher. Sláinte!
Favorite Irish Blessings:
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face and rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
May your glass be ever full,
May the roof over your head be always strong,
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the Devil knows you’re dead.
