Fiction Fridays - Tucked behind our wedding photo

“Exploring life through fiction, together.”

I never met my great grandad, but I’ve heard plenty of stories. How he’d take his kids in the truck on deliveries. How he could vamp a piano for hours without a clue how to read music. How he’d waste money betting on horses despite his wife begging him to stop. How they’d fight over it. Their small terraced house shaking from the screaming.

He said he’d stopped. Promised even. Sure, he’d said it before, but this time seemed different. Maybe it was the tears. For a week, it was like our honeymoon all over again, but without the midges and having to shag in a tent.

I found the slip in his wallet. Ok, so I was looking, but his eyebrow was twitching like when he’s lying to his mother. Two horses, a tenner. Almost nothing. Almost.

Quote of the Week

“There are two great pleasures in gambling: that of winning and that of losing.” — French Proverb

Book of the month

Final Words

When his wife died, he lost all interest in the races. He didn’t read the sport section, or look for tips. Apparently, he didn’t make another bet in his life. It seems the whole thing was just to get a rise out of his wife. What did he gain? And what ‘bets’ am I making, just for a reaction?

With Love,

Josiah
