Fiction Fridays - Saturday night's alright for fighting

“Exploring life through fiction, together.”

What do you do when you’re stressed? I used to hunt through the cupboards, devouring anything I could stuff straight into my mouth. I’d thought I’d got over it. But once again, I’ve been snacking with abandon, trying to ease external circumstances by filling my innards.

Fiction Bite - Saturday night’s alright for fighting

We had a fight last night. Man, it was a doozy. We were screaming and fist shaking and bringing up all the shit we’d done since we first hooked up. My hands shook as I imagined crunching my knuckles through her face and into the soft, sticky bit behind her eyes. It felt so good I fell silent. She kept shouting regardless, so I gotta watch what we’d become.

I grabbed a coat and left without a word. What could I have said? She followed me to the door and hurled abuse as I walked into the rain. And I can’t blame her. I’d have done the same the day before.

Book of the month

Daring Greatly by Brené Brown

This book was so great, I had to put it down regularly to give myself time to deal with the truths it crashed through my nice, safe, self image. I love how she keeps the tone chatty while rewriting so many assumptions. And I love how she’s straight up about her own struggles to implement what she knows is the correct way. I think everyone could benefit from reading it. And, if even some of us fully implemented it, the world would be a far better place.

For a taster, check out her TED Talk here.

Final Word

Binge eating is ruining my self image. I like to think of myself as autonomous and rational. Sure, I know we all have our failings, but why can’t I mitigate them? It doesn’t stop me ramming down banana chips way past bedtime, though. Now I have to go back to dealing with my messy self. The one with great aspirations and lower willpower. The me I prefer not to see.

Who do you like to see yourself as? Is that image helping you stretch, or hiding areas you need to address? When was the last time you looked at yourself through a different lens? As always, if you’re willing to hit reply, it’d make my day to hear from you.

With Love,

Josiah
