Fiction Fridays - Fourteen's too young

Apr 23, 2021 11:01 am

We’re moving house soon, so I’ve been thinking a lot about possessions. While sorting, I’ve discovered things I last saw two or three houses ago. I’ve found family treasures, useful gadgets, and an awful lot of junk.

Fiction Bite - Fourteen’s too young

I fed him a bottle as we bumped along the dusty lane. He held my finger, a tiny hand grasping mine. He’d not let me put him down all day. I’d nearly lost it as I tried to pack his clothes and toys into my battered blue holdall. It had been mine the day my parents put me into care. I’d fought to keep it every time I moved. It was my only link to them. Now it would be my last gift to him.

Final Words

I struggle deciding what to keep and what to throw. Is a carrier bag full of rocks junk or treasure?  They’re memento’s from early in our marriage. Whenever I was away, I’d bring home a pretty stone. I can still place most of them with the trip.

If somebody else sorted through our house they wouldn’t know the history. Sure, most of it is useless. But I’d be more upset at losing the little curios than the things I use daily. Stuff can be replaced, but the stories, once lost, are gone forever.

I kept the rocks, in case you were wondering.

With Love
