Hey friends,

Welcome back to another issue of Thought Caffeine, a weekly newsletter where I share my favourite productivity tips, random party facts, and other interesting finds throughout my week.

By the way, if you have other cool name ideas for this weekly newsletter, please let me know by hitting <Reply> to this email ✌🏽

💻 Macbook shortcut: Cmd+Ctl+spacebar

Is a shortcut I discovered earlier this year and have found extremely useful. The shortcut takes you to the emoji repository, where you can do a word search or have a quick scroll through the list.

This shortcut works on most apps, and is useful for adding emojis when no emoji tab is available (eg renaming Finder folders, Spotify playlists, etc).

🤖 Psychogeographies

Contemporary artist Dustin Yellin, who was recently interviewed by Tim Ferriss, creates ‘Psychogeographies’, which are glass sculptures made through overlapping layers that create three dimensional collages. It’s difficult to explain but they're definitely up there on the list of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

🖊 Article: David Perell on why Writing Makes You A Better Speaker

Neil de Grasse Tyson, who you may know as one of America’s most loved contemporary scientists, told Perell in an interview that he’s already written down practically everything he says in public.

He says that writing sharpens the substance of his ideas. Unlike speech, words on a page can be reworked and rewritten until they’re clear and concise. By the time Neil sits down for an interview, the hard work of thinking is complete and he turns into a carrier for ideas he’s already penned.

“If you want to become a better speaker, start by writing every day,” wrote Perell.

David Perell is one of my favourite writers in the world, by the way. If you're thinking about starting a little writing side gig of your own, or just enjoy reading words that flow in rhythmic harmony, you'll love his work.

🗒️ This week's article: Doublespeak: You Don’t Realise You’re Being Lied To

I talk about:

  • Why the smartest person in the room is not the most objectively intelligent being, but the cleverest speaker
  • How the food industry can get away with deceitful labels
  • How to avoid being deceived (even by your friends and family)

📖 Quote of the Week

“Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has talked about this temptation. He reminds himself that there was “no aha moment” for his billion-dollar behemoth, no matter what he might read in his own press clippings. The founding of a company, making money in the market, or the formation of an idea is messy. Reducing it to a narrative retroactively creates a clarity that never was and never will be there”

From Ego Is The Enemy by Ryan Holiday. Resurfaced via Readwise.
