Hey ,
As the holidays approach, I can almost hear the collective sigh of those who are feeling the pressure to create MORE MAGIC. The gourmet meal, the Instagrammable home, the perfect gifts, the calm, contented family gathering...
The pressure is on - even if it burns us out in the process.
We all know that chasing "perfect" often leaves us exhausted, depleted, and missing out on the true magic of the season. Yet we still strive. Is it because we truly want perfection? Or is it more that we lack a relationship with "good enough?"
I, for one, think it's time to change that.
This year, I invite you to explore the concept of the "Good Enough" Holiday. It's about releasing the pressure, letting go of unrealistic expectations, and prioritizing what truly matters: connection, joy, laughter, and those precious moments that make memories.
Here's how to cultivate a "Good Enough" Holiday:
- Take Off the Superhero Cape: You don't have to do it all. Delegate tasks, ask for help, and give yourself permission to say "no" to things that drain your energy.
- Quiet the Inner Critic: That voice in your head that whispers, "It's not good enough"? Create an "out-of-office" message for it and send it on its own holiday. See you in the new year, Inner Critic!
- Exclaim Imperfection: Burned the cookies? Tree a little lopsided? This is the perfect opportunity to shout, "Good Enough!" (and maybe have a good laugh about it).
- Prioritize Presence: Put down your phone, step away from the to-do list, and truly be present with the people you love. Those moments of connection are the real gifts.
- Nourish Yourself: Don't let your self-attendance routines fall by the wayside. Schedule time for rest, movement, and activities that bring you joy.
Unique Tips for Saying "No"
- The "Sandwich Method" 🥪: "Thank you so much for inviting me! (positive) Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this time. (negative) I hope you have a wonderful time! (positive)"
- The "Broken Record"record: Gently but firmly repeat your "no" as many times as needed. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm not able to take on anything else right now."
- The "Preemptive No": Anticipate requests and set boundaries in advance. "I'm trying to keep my schedule light this holiday season, so I'll likely be declining most invitations."
Quieting the Inner Critic
- Name It to Tame It: Acknowledge the critical voice and give it a name (mine is Cheryle). This helps create distance and reduces its power.
- Challenge Its Thoughts: Ask yourself, "Is this thought helpful? Is it true? Is there another way to look at this situation?"
- Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend.
This holiday season, give yourself the gift of a "Good Enough" experience. Release the pressure, embrace imperfection, and create space for joy, connection, and meaningful moments.
