Let there be orchids and love

, I am one sleepy puppy today. I don’t know why…perhaps because I’m all “peopled” out after running my writer guild’s monthly meeting. Regardless, I’m heading for a nap in a few.

I’m popping in today to brag about my orchids. People who know me, know that I’m a huge plant person. I have them everywhere, and during the winter many of those outside beauties come in where it’s warm. But orchids are a new thing for me—I’ve always considered them too prissy to try and grow. I received one as a gift two years ago, enjoyed its blooms and then grieved when they were gone. Okay, maybe a bit of hyperbole there, but still, I missed them.

I kept the plant around not having any idea what to do with it or how to make it bloom. I did a bit of research, but then stuck it, and another I picked up, out on the deck for the summer. You know that little tag that comes on them that says to give them 3 ice cubes? HA! All summer, they got watered right along with all of my other plants. Fall came, and I brought the orchids inside.

Then a miracle happened. I noticed a shoot that looked different than all the roots that were popping up. Each day I would check and sure enough, it was growing. And growing, and growing, and then needed a stake.

Orchids really try my patience. They take FOREVER to bloom. But oh what a joy when they do. I’m now the proud plant momma of two gorgeous purple (violet?) lovelies. They sit in a window right in my line of sight while I work so they are always there cheering me on. I still can’t say I actually “know” how to grow orchids, nor whether I would want to add more to the cozy duo. But I do know this experiment has brought me many smiles and now I’m sharing them with you. Enjoy!
