You Know Those Intention Words...

If I have to boil it to one word, I would say 'broaden.' (I also played with the word 'touch.') This year my intention is for people to read my words. And to get something from them.

Last year I had an epiphany/crisis.

The crisis?

Even though I'd been working really really hard to sell more books and make my business grow, even though I'd made sacrifices to get this to happen, even though I'd taken classes and made plans and "shown up," even though I'd set up so much scaffolding with the intention that a beautiful building would be built, I did worse in 2024 than I did in 2023, like, a lot worse, to the tune of about 80% worse (and I didn't slay in 2023 either, but I at least made some money for the first time ever).

The epiphany?

I just want people to read my books. I realized this driving in the car on my way to church one Sunday morning in July, and the realization brought me to tears (I know, I know... Do I want some crackers with my cheese. But for real, it was an experience for me). I realized that it wasn't really about money for me as much as I just wanted my books to touch some lives. Big ways, little ways, I didn't much care. And, yes, I wanted to make money with the books. But what I wanted more was for people to read them and for people to enjoy them and for people to feel like they were slightly better people for having done so.

So this year, I'm going to try to get my books into people's hands in any way possible. Which might mean that a bunch of them go free, or super cheap. Or whatever. I just want them to get read.

I remember reading that when Brandon Sanderson was getting started, he knew he had something good, but he didn't know how to get this good thing into people's hands. I feel kind of like that (though I know I'm no Brandon Sanderson). He started putting big chunks of his books up on his newsletter. Maybe I'll do that too (if you have any great ideas, send them my way). I'll also be doing sales and freebies, and, heck, if you want one of my books and you can't afford it, message me and I'll get you a copy.

I want people to read my stuff.

I hope it touches you.

Happy New Year!
