Summer here has been--as my sweet, precious children put it--"hot as Satan's butt crack." And they're not wrong. So I'm excited for the days to shorten and cool. I also consider fall prime reading season. I know it's not beachy, but it's just so cozy. Below you'll find books to cozify your fall. Enjoy!

(P.S. I originally had "Hot As Satan's Butt Crack" as my subject line, and there's this AI rating thing with my newsletter server and it did NOT like that subject line. It gave it a D- rating. When I put "Fall Promos" as my subject line, it gave that a B+, which--come on--that's a pretty darn boring subject line... I compromised.)

Is it possible to find love in a place that has only hurt you?

When Gretchen Stephens inherits an old farmhouse from the grandmother she barely knew, she has one practical option: sell it. After all, there's no sentiment beyond a few fuzzy memories and no money without a sale.

Her resolve only solidifies when the hot handyman, Jackson, shows up to help haul off the old refrigerator. Because even if she could make the old farmhouse into the fancy event venue of her dreams—and she won’t say the idea hasn’t crossed her mind a time or two—the last thing she needs is some country boy to trap her in her past, and the last thing she wants is to leave the city she loves to go back to the hills of Kentucky.

However, when disaster strikes one snowy night and she and Jackson have to work together to help a boy survive, Gretchen realizes she might have misjudged Jackson. And maybe the whole town.

But is it too late to let the very place that wounded her finally start to heal her?

He didn't ask to be rescued. He asked to be seen.

Eighteen months after a storm took his boat, fisherman Hiroshi Takahashi is still alive - stranded on a nameless island, counting the days in shells, writing home in a language almost no one left can read. He's stopped hoping for rescue. He hopes only that someone will know he was here.

Then his bottle washes ashore in Oregon.

A lonely beachcomber. A reporter with nothing left to lose. A town that adopts a stranger's fate as its own. They race to decode a ruined message - never guessing the man who wrote it is still out there. Still counting. Almost out of time.

And on a far island, his wife refuses to sign the paper that says he's gone.

Three shores. One breathless convergence. Still Counting is a novel about grief, stubborn hope, and the need, above all, to be seen.

Outwardly, Elaine Buxton has it all-an aristocratic name, money, jewels, a castle and an amusing group of friends who adore her.

She also has a secret.

At age seventeen, shy Elaine, like many other daughters who had less than desirable physical traits or appalling social skills, was sent off to a select school to be polished, slenderized and taught the intricate rules of Edwardian etiquette. After returning from school after her eighteenth birthday, her mother, the formidable Lady Buxton, was delighted to find that Elaine had been transformed into a slim, refined and charming young woman and knew a brilliant marriage was forthcoming.

But Elaine has a secret that could destroy everything.

After the continent erupted in war, Elaine hoped she would finally be able to escape her mother's thumb and live a brave new life like her cousins, Rowena and Victoria. But terrified for her son's safety on the battlefields of France, Lady Buxton clung to her daughter even tighter than before. When a mysterious man from Elaine's past returns and threatens to reveal Elaine's secret, she must choose between duty to her family or defying her mother in a desperate quest for freedom and love.

By the time his best friend's screenplay becomes a worldwide hit film, Ben knows the version audiences fell in love with is not the whole truth. What remains unclear is where Taylor's fiction ends and reality begins.

Taylor Thorne is a struggling Los Angeles screenwriter with a habit of sabotaging jobs and rewriting his own life in the telling. Then a fleeting, inexplicable encounter at Sunset and Marmont shatters his writer's block. A woman appears in his path-vivid, unmistakable-before vanishing just as quickly. Soon after, Taylor begins writing a script that will change everything: a love story built around the woman he cannot forget, and a supposed crossing between worlds that Ben only begins to understand after Taylor is gone. At first, Ben assumes his friend has finally found creative momentum. Then Ben meets Natalie himself. Her presence makes Taylor's story harder to dismiss and stranger to comprehend, especially when Ben can find no trace of her anywhere else.

Every family has secrets. And this one is calling her name…

When Caitríona Devane inherits a crumbling lighthouse on a remote Irish island, she believes it must be some kind of mistake. Her mother, Róisín, never spoke of Saltgrave. Never mentioned the Devane women. And never explained why she feared the sea.

Caitríona arrives with one suitcase, a marriage she longs to escape, and the fragile hope that distance might help her breathe. The lighthouse is meant to be a temporary refuge. A legal loose end. A place to stay while she decides what remains of her life.

Hidden inside the lighthouse are the diaries of Nora Devane, the great-grandmother Caitríona was never told existed. Nora was a keeper's wife during the hard years after the war, a woman left alone to tend the light. As Caitríona reads Nora's words, she finds not a family legend, but a line of women shaped by love, fear, sacrifice, and the terrible cost of being needed by others.

Nora heard the sea calling names. Names of men.

Men who hurt women. Men who vanished in storms, in coves, and off cliff paths. Men whose deaths were reported as accidents.
