Konnichiwa from the Japan Switch Team!
This week, we're strolling a little of the beaten path! I often hear of Japan travel plans centred around onsen (hot springs), otera (temples), and sushi - which are all fantastic... BUT THERE'S SO MUCH MORE TO JAPAN!
Without any further ado, let's get into it!
Ultimate Guide to Sumo Wrestling
If you really want to make your trip to Japan special, catching a sumo match can be a great place to start. There’s a lot of history behind sumo and plenty of places where you can share a meal with one. But be warned - they're going to bring out sumo-size portions! You can even book some time and train with a professional sumo wrestler!
Ultimate Guide to Japanese Archery (AKA Kyuudo)
To be clear - this isn't some Hawkeye from Marvel business... Rather, it's closer to the pursuit of inner peace. Japanese archery is more focused on mindfulness and spirituality - think of it as yoga with a deadly weapon (okay, maybe not that far). Taking a Japanese archery class is an eye-opening experience and you'll gain a lot of insight into Japanese culture, its underlying beliefs, and why Japan is the peaceful place it is.
Ultimate Guide to Hose Racing in Japan
Alright, so if you have a problem with gambling, skip this one. If you don't, however, this is a great way to spend an afternoon if you're in town during one of the many big races! Interestingly, horse racing was originally a religious ceremony for the Imperial Court! It goes waaaay back to the 8th century when races between the samurai were held at the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto. Read on to learn more and find out where you can attend a race!
