If you’re in Japan in March, you might notice stores filling up with elegant chocolates, plush gifts, and carefully wrapped sweets. That’s because White Day, celebrated on March 14th, is Japan’s answer to Valentine’s Day!
In Japan, V-Day is when women give gifts to the men in their lives - both romantic and platonic. White Day, on the other hand, is a day dedicated to men returning the favor. One phrase you may hear is sanbai gaeshi which translates to 'triple the return.' In other words, the White Day gift should be worth 2-3 times as much as the V-Day offerings one received.
