Konnichiwa from the Japan Switch Team!
Summer is almost here! In other words, I've got a couple months ahead of cicadas screaming outside my window all day.
But there is a lot to love about Japan's summer. And there is a lot to do.
So, I'll save the lead-in, and get right to it!
Ultimate Guide to Summer in Japan
It's going to be hot and humid, and you're going to want to invest in Uniqlo's Airism undershirts. But it's also festival season, so if you're thinking you'd love to wear a kimono or yukata and check out some fireworks or enjoy some fresh yakisoba or takoyaki from yatai (food stalls), now is the time! Check out our list of best spots for the gram, fun things to do, and less-touristy spots to check out!
Ultimate Guide: The Difference Between Yukata and Kimono
At first glance, it might be difficult to tell the difference between yukata and kimono. But before that, you might ask, 'is it okay for me to wear one as a foreigner?' In truth, most Japanese people love seeing people from other cultures wearing kimono/yukata. You'll likely get some compliments or even some advice on how to adjust the outfit properly. In any case, it's a great conversation starter if you're looking to make Japanese friends and commemorate your time here!
Ultimate Guide to Mountain Climbing Around Tokyo
So, Mt. Fuji is not in Tokyo, but the season for climbing is early July to September - meaning we are kicking off soon if that's on your bucket list! But for those of you who want to appreciate nature a little closer to your hotel, there are a lot of great options such as Mt. Takao - famous for its temple views and even the occasional monkey sighting! If you're looking for a little more of a challenge, we recommend the twin peaks of Mt. Tsukuba. The peaks are called Nyotai (female body) and Nantai (male body) and host their own shrines. Locals know it as the 'Fuji of the East' so it's definitely one to consider for nature-lovers!
