A Special Award!

If you’ve read last month’s newsletter, you know I’m celebrating Deadly Burden winning an award. My fiction has finalled in The Word Awards in the past but “always the shortlist, never the prize.” The win means a lot, yet although I (and my editor and early readers) did the work I feel like the award goes to my characters. They may be fictional, but if they hadn’t done their part there’d be no story 🙃 

But this one’s for me (even though my name’s misspelled!) 

I’ve received the 2024 Janette Oke Award from InScribe Christian Writers’ Fellowship.

“Wait,” you protest. “You don’t write sweet prairie romances or historical fiction!”

No I don’t, although Ms. Oke’s novels were some of the earliest Christian fiction I knew and loved.

So how could I receive this award?

Named “in honour of founding and lifetime member, Janette Oke,”the award is given every second year “to a current member [of InScribe] who shows a strong Christian commitment, a desire to impact society with family and Christ-like values in their work, belongs to InScribe, and is innovative or brave in their chosen genre. …a sense of commitment, conviction, and a strong desire to persevere in their field.” [From InScribe’s janette-oke-award page.]

I feel affirmed. These moments don’t come very often, and they deserve to be savoured when they do.
