Don't say this to Natives

Apr 07, 2026 12:42 am

Happy Tuesday!

"What are you doing?"

My girl asked me yesterday, with an innocent smile, while I was in the kitchen, minding my own business.

I was like..."Say that again?" 😒

My girl went "Um....what are you working on?"

I was like..."That's better." 😄

Do you see any problem here?

"What are you doing?" is actually a bit rude, as it comes across as confrontational or abrupt.

It's almost like an interrogation.

You are basically hinting - Hmmm....I'm smelling trouble.

Typically, I would just ask, "What have you been up to?" or "What are you up to?" if I am just being curious in social settings.

"What are you doing?" can still be used, but NOT alone. It would be much more appropriate to add "darling/sweetie/my dear" at the end to soften the tone.

If you learned something from this - congratulations!

That means you CARE about manners and your inner self wants to learn more, so you can sound classier!
