Hi there,

Here's my weekly dose of Irish for April 9th, 2021.

  • I have updated my top 40 Irish jokes article and added a new one(read it at the end of this email.
  • Haven't posted too much this week; next week will have more content. Anything you would like to see? Reply and let me know.
  • Did you know? I have been sending out the weekly dose of Irish since 2015! Wow.

Five Irish facts for your Friday:

  1. In Ireland, many place names can trace their origins to Gaelic, Celtic and English names. Including a river in Galway called Sruffaunoughterluggatoora and Muckanaghederdauhaulia holds the longest name for a town in Ireland, Co. Galway. Wow.
  2. “Why is the sky blue?” A simple question, but did you know that it was an Irish scientist, John Tyndal. The discovery was made in the 1860s of why the sky is blue in the day but red at sunset. Source RIGB
  3. Did you know? Germany once tried to use the shamrock in the early 1980s. However, it has been trademarked by the Government of Ireland. In the early 1980s, Ireland defended its right to use the shamrock as its national symbol in a German trademark case, including high-level representation from Taoiseach Charles Haughey. Having lost initially, Ireland won on appeal to the German Supreme Court in 1985. Now the symbol appears in many, many, many shapes and forms. Including Aer Lingus, Irish postal stamps and its air traffic control call sign is “SHAMROCK”.
  4.  According to the Belfast List, 2,225 people boarded the Titanic. Of those, 1,317 were passengers and 908 people were members of the crew. Only 713 people survived.
  5. New York City’s Central Park gets all the hype about being a huge city park, but Phoenix Park in Dublin is actually twice the size of Central Park.

This weeks Irish joke is "The Holiday"

This is something to think about when negative people are doing their best to rain on your parade.

So remember this story the next time someone who knows nothing and cares less tries to make your life miserable:

A woman was at her hairdresser's getting her hair styled for a trip to Rome with her husband.. She mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded:

" Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded and dirty.. You're crazy to go to Rome .. So, how are you getting there?"

"We're taking BA," was the reply. "We got a great rate!"

"BA?" exclaimed the hairdresser.. " That's a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly, and they're always late.

So, where are you staying in Rome ?"

"We'll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome 's Tiber River called Teste."

"Don't go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks it’s gonna be something special and exclusive, but it's really a dump."

"We're going to go to see the Vatican and maybe get to see the Pope."

"That's rich," laughed the hairdresser. You and a million other people trying to see him. He'll look the size of an ant.

Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You're going to need it..."

A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome

"It was wonderful," explained the woman, "not only were we on time in one of BA's brand new planes, but it was overbooked, and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who waited on me hand and foot.

And the hotel was great! They'd just finished a £5 million remodelling job, and now it's a jewel, the finest hotel in the city.

They too were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us their owner's suite at no extra charge!"

"Well," muttered the hairdresser, "that's all well and good, but I bet you didn't get to see the Pope."

"Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder, and explained that the Pope likes to meet some of the visitors, and if I'd be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me.

Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me"

"Oh, really! What'd he say ?"

He said: "Who the Fuck did your hair?"

This weeks top Irish poem: The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith

Number 15 in the top 100 Irish poems, it is a poem published in 1770 about the decline of a village and the emigration of many of its residents to America.

In the poem, Oliver Goldsmith condemns rural depopulation and the indulgence of the rich.

A great poem and certainly not a short read but ironic how a poem from 1770 is still just as relevant in 2021.

As the poem is over 500+ words I have decided it is best not to include in the email haha. You can read the full poem here.

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork and I have been involved in many Irish related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is, in fact just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and being a part of the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites out there did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless if people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

From there, it expanded to a group also called Irish Around The World, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There has been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

If you haven't joined yet, you don't know what you are missing, sign up here.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
