  • The weekly dose is back on Friday! Hope you enjoy it. This week I managed to find a bunch of great new Irish jokes. But you can read the 5 new Irish jokes here.
  • Finally got back to updating the Celtic tree of life article. I published it in 2018 but it was in much need of updating. It is certainly one of the more interesting Celtic Symbols. You might not be interested but in Celtic mythology but it is worth a read 🙂
  • It is 300 days until St Patrick's day!

5 Things you probably didn't know about Ireland☘️:

  1. Did you know? Ireland has won the Eurovision Song Contest seven times, more than any other country. Despite that, we did not make it into this years Eurovision final.
  2. Did you know? St Patrick is the Patron Saint Of Nigeria. (Source NPR)
  3. Did you know? Nigeria drinks more Guinness than anywhere else in the world! The image below - 1968 advertising sheet for Guinness in West Africa depicts the popular ad slogan, "Guinness gives you power.image
  4. Did you know? 25% Of Europe’s computers are made in Ireland.
  5. Did you know? Ireland had a female president in 1990! In the 1990 elections, Mary Robinson was elected the republic’s first woman president. The election of a candidate who was not only a woman but also had socialist and feminist leanings was a huge paradigm shift in Irish politics.

This week's Irish joke, An Irish Viagra

An Elderly Irish lady visits her physician to ask his advice on reviving her husband’s libido.

“What about trying Viagra?” asked the doctor.

“Not a chance” she replied. “He won’t even take an aspirin”.

“Not a problem,” said the doctor. “Give him an Irish Viagra.”

“What on Earth is Irish Viagra?” she asked.

“It’s Viagra dissolved in his morning cup of coffee. He won’t even taste it.

Let me know how it goes,” he said. She called the doctor the very next afternoon.

“How did it go?” he asked.

“Oh Jesus Doctor, it was terrible. Just horrid, I tell ya! I’m beside myself!”

“Oh, no! What in the world happened?” asked the doctor

“Well, I did the deed, Doctor, just as you advised.

I put the Viagra in his morning coffee, and he drank it.

Well, you know, it took effect almost immediately, and he jumped straight up out of his chair with a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and his pants a-bulging.

Then, with one fierce swoop of his arm, he sent the cups, saucers, and everything else that was on the table flying across the room ripped my clothes to tatters and passionately took me then and there, right on top of the table. T’was a nightmare, I tell ya, an absolute nightmare!”

“Why so terrible?” asked the doctor. “Wasn’t the sex good?”

“Freakin jaysus, it was the best sex I’ve had in me last 25 years, but sure as I’m sittin’ here, Doctor… I’ll never be able to show me face in Starbucks again!”

This week top Irish poem:

“The Workmans Friend” – By Flann O’Brien(A Pint Of Plain)

A pint of plain is a beer and if there was ever a poem that poetically put a beer as essential it would be this one. This poem comes in at number 49 on my list of top 100 Irish poems.

It certainly is lighter than previous poems I have shared such as death of an Irishwoman and the stolen child

This witty poem was written by Flann O’Brien(also known as Brian O’Nolan). He lived from 1911 to 1966 O’Brian was an alcoholic for much of his life and suffered from ill-health in his later years.

One could say his fondness of the pint of plain, in this case, was his downfall.

In this poem, O’Brien speaks about all of life’s problems and how a pint of plain can solve everything. Also known as the “Workman’s friend.

The Workman’s Friend, by Flann O’Brien

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night –
A pint of plain is your only man.

When money’s tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt –
A pint of plain is your only man.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.

When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare –
A pint of plain is your only man.

In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life –
A pint of plain is your only man.

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork and I have been involved in many Irish related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and being a part of the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites out there did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless if people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

It expanded to a group also called Irish Around The World, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in, and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There has been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

If you haven't joined yet, you don't know what you are missing, sign up here.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
