Your weekly dose of Irish ☘️😶‍🌫️

Jul 23, 2022 2:48 pm

Hi there,

Here's your weekly dose of Irish for Saturday, July 23rd 2022...

Irish wisdom: May misfortune follow you the rest of your life and never catch up.

Latest updates:

  • As things got back on track, I finally got caught with Covid. I am much better now, but it was a rough few days.
  • I hope you are having a great Saturday, and I wish you a lovely Sunday!
  • This week I didn't include the Irish poem in the email. Mainly because it is over 3000 words, which would make this email way too long, but you can read the entire poem here, or there will be links at the bottom.

This week's posts:

It can be hard to imagine in present-day what life would be like with ten children.

I am sure there are some cases, but they are infrequent.

This week's Irish jokes

Irish Jokes Paddy’s wife is deaf:

Paddy feared his wife Mary wasn’t hearing as well as she used to and thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem.

The doctor told him there was a simple, informal test that paddy could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. Here’s what you do said the doctor; stand about 40 feet away from her and, in a normal conversational speaking tone, see if she hears you.

If not, go to 30 feet away and then 20 feet and so on until you get a response. Later that day, when Paddy gets home from the pub, he sees Mary in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he is in the hallway; he thinks to himself I’m about 40 feet away. Let’s see what happens. In a normal tone, he asks, “Mary, what’s for dinner, my lovely?” No response, so he moves closer 30 feet he says,” Mary what’s for feckin dinner ?”. Still no response.

He moves closer by about 20 feet. “Mary, for Christ’s sake, can ye be telling me what’s for dinner ?” Still nothing, and again at 10 feet, still nothing. So he walks up behind her and says Mary, can you tell me what’s for dinner?

She replied,

FOR F*** SAKE PADDY FOR THE FIFTH TIME, CHICKEN!!!

So what is this week's top Irish poem?

This week I decided to pick a poem from the top 100 Irish poems list. And I picked number 54 by the excellent Paul Muldoon.

The title immediately caught my eye as, typically, Irish poets use Irish-themed names for their poem titles. Such as Mise Éire or Cill Chais.

So when I saw the title “Incantata” I thought to myself, ‘that’s not Irish!’ and indeed it is not. It is Italian, and the word means “enchantment.” But I do prefer the sound of the Italian word. The poem “Incantata” itself is unique and beautiful. While this is a very long poem that has even been turned into a play, it is worth reading.

The poem is written in memory of Mary Farl Powers, his partner who passed away two years earlier. Who is Paul Muldoon? Paul Muldoon is an Irish poet. He has published over thirty collections and won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the T. S. Eliot Prize.

I did say it is a long poem, and Muldoon even performed this as a play in 2019. But it is certainly worth the read. Enjoy this wonderful Irish poem.

As this poem is over 3000 words, I kept it on the blog post. Which you can read here.

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork, and I have been involved in many Irish-related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and participate in the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia, and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless of whether people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

It expanded to an Irish Around The World group, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There have been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

Sign up here if you haven't joined yet and don't know what you are missing.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
