Brendan was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven, he said, "Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place, I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up the drink." Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Brendan looked up again and said, "Never mind, I found one.”

A guy sitting at a bar in an international airport noticed a very beautiful woman sitting next to him. He thought to himself, "Wow, she's so gorgeous she must be a flight attendant. But which airline does she work for? Hoping to pick her up, he leaned towards her and uttered the Delta slogan: "Love to fly, and it shows?" She gave him a blank, confused stare, and he immediately thought to himself, "Oh darn, she doesn't work for Delta". A moment later, another slogan popped into his head. He leaned towards her again, "Something special in the air?" She gave him the same confused look. He mentally kicked himself and scratched Singapore Airlines off the list. Next, he tried the Thai Airways slogan: "Smooth as Silk." This time the woman turned on him. "What in God's name do you want?" The man smiled, then slumped back in his chair and said, "Ahhhhh, Aer Lingus!"

A lady is having a bad day at the roulette tables. She's down to her last 50 Euros. Exasperated, she exclaims, "What rotten luck I've had today! What in the world should I do now?" A man standing next to her suggests, "I don't know... why don't you play your age?" He walks away. Moments later, his attention is grabbed by a great commotion at the roulette table. Maybe she won! He rushes back to the table and pushes his way through the crowd. The lady is lying limp on the floor, with the table operator kneeling over her. The man is stunned. He asks, "What happened? Is she all right?" The operator replies, "I don't know. She put all her money on 29, and 36 came up. Then she just fainted!"

So what is this week's top Irish poem?

The Wayfarer, By Padraic Pearse Top 20 Irish Poem

  1.  I hoped to pick number 17 on the top 100 Irish poems list this week. It is mainly because it is St Patrick’s day, but I realised I had already published it in August 2021! So this week, I went with number 20 from the top 100 list—another appearance of the great Padraic Pearse

What is the “The Wayfarer” all about?

top Irish poem

Pearse talks about the fleeting of life and how quickly it all goes by. It’s both a joyful and sorrowful poem, and I would also say very emotional. It also starts quite positive and speaks about the joy of life, only to do a complete flip at the end of the poem and end in sadness.

But as they say, all good things have to come to an end. It was written on the eve of his execution at Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin (May 2, 1916). To have such composure the day before his execution demonstrates Pearse’s brilliance.

Enjoy this powerful and emotional Irish poem.

The Wayfarer
The beauty of the world hath made me sad,
This beauty that will pass;
Sometimes my heart hath shaken with great joy
To see a leaping squirrel in a tree,
Or a red lady-bird upon a stalk,
Or little rabbits in a field at evening,
Lit by a slanting sun,
Or some green hill where shadows drifted by
Some quiet hill where mountainy man hath sown
And soon would reap; near to the gate of Heaven;
Or children with bare feet upon the sands
Of some ebbed sea, or playing on the streets
Of little towns in Connacht,
Things young and happy.
And then my heart hath told me:
These will pass,
Will pass and change, will die and be no more,
Things bright and green, things young and happy;
And I have gone upon my way
Sorrowful.

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork and I have been involved in many Irish related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and being a part of the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites out there did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless of whether people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

It expanded to an Irish Around The World group, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in, and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There has been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

Sign up here if you haven't joined yet and don't know what you are missing.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
