Hi there,

Irish saying - You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.

Did you know? - Around 45% of the worlds Tic Tac’s are made in Cork. They are manufactured in the Ferrero factory in Cork, Ireland. The factory produces about 36 tic tac's per second. Wow!

This week's Irish joke

An Irish bodybuilder takes off his shirt, and the blonde woman says:

Wow what a great chest you have!

He says

100 lbs of dynamine babe!

He then takes off his pants, and the blonde says

Wow what massive calves you have!
He says
100 lbs of dynamine babe!

He then removes his underwear, and the blonde goes running, screaming in fear.

He puts on his clothes and chases behind her. Once he eventually caught up to her, he asked why the hell she ran away like that.

The blonde replied:

I was afraid to be around all that dynamite when I saw how short the fuse was!

Murphy lost his eye in an accident and couldn't afford the price of a glass eye.

So he carved one out of wood. But he was so self-conscious that he never left the house.

Finally, his friend Paddy came over and forced him to go out.

"There's a dance over at the club," he said.
"So what if one of your eyes is made out of wood?"
"All right," said Murphy, "but if anybody makes fun of my eye I'm leaving."

He went to the dance and stood around, trying to build up his courage.

And then he saw a woman standing alone in the corner. She was very attractive, but she had a hunchback.

"She's worse off than me," Murphy thought. "The least I can do is ask her to dance.

He walked across the crowded dance floor and approached the girl.

Would you care to dance? he asked.
Would I?!" she exclaimed.
"That does it," he shouted, "Hunchback! Hunchback!"

So what is this week's top Irish poem?

As there is no new Irish poem this week, I have included last week's poem:

Inniskeen Road, July Evening, by Patrick Kavanagh

This week, I have picked number 30 from the top 100 Irish poems list. It is titled Inniskeen Road, July Evening and is primarily about Irish life in the countryside in the 1930s.

Kavanagh writes this poem(as he does in so many others) with such fantastic imagery. You get the feeling of isolation and his rustic imagination for the Irish countryside.

It seems that there is a big event going on that evening, but Kavanagh was not invited to “Billy Brenand’s barn.” So, as a result, it depicts the isolation and loneliness that he would have felt.

Inniskeen Road Ireland

I love his line, “A road, a mile of kingdom, I am king.” Here Kavanagh is saying that he is the king of everything he surveys, but he is the only king of “Of banks and stones and every blooming thing.”

A wonderfully written poem that perfectly encapsulates how he must have felt that July evening.

I like this poem as it reminds me of his other very descriptive poem Spraying the Potatoes.

Inniskeen Road: July Evening

By Patrick Kavanagh

The bicycles go by in twos and threes –
There’s a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn to-night,
And there’s the half-talk code of mysteries
And the wink-and-elbow language of delight.
Half-past eight and there is not a spot
Upon a mile of road, no shadow thrown
That might turn out a man or woman, not
A footfall tapping secrecies of stone.
I have what every poet hates in spite
Of all the solemn talk of contemplation.
Oh, Alexander Selkirk knew the plight
Of being king and government and nation.
A road, a mile of kingdom, I am king
Of banks and stones and every blooming thing.

Patrick Kavanagh 1904 – 1967

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork and I have been involved in many Irish related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and being a part of the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites out there did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless if people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

It expanded to a group also called Irish Around The World, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in, and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There has been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

If you haven't joined yet, you don't know what you are missing, sign up here.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
