Irish Joke:

This week I have two Irish jokes; enjoy!

A teacher is teaching a class, and she sees that Johnny isn't paying attention, so she asks him, "If there are three ducks sitting on the fence, and you shoot one, how many are left?" Johnny says, "None." The teacher asks, "Why?" Johnny says, "Because the shot scared them all off." The teacher says, "No, two, but I like how you're thinking." Johnny asks the teacher, "If you see three women walking out of an ice cream parlour, one is licking her ice cream, one is sucking her ice cream, and one is biting her ice cream, which one is married?" The teacher says, "The one sucking her ice cream." Johnny says, "No, the one with the wedding ring, but I like how you're thinking!"

So what is this week's top Irish poem?

Night Feed By Eavan Boland – A Loving Poem For Parents

This week I have picked number 58 from the top 100 Irish poems list. It is a beautiful Irish poem about a new mother getting up in the middle of the night to feed her baby. This a poem that I am sure all new parents will relate to. What I like about the poem Night Feed is that it doesn’t try to have a hidden meaning; Boland is just expressing in words what that moment is like.

And she does so with fantastic imagery and description. Enjoy.

Night Feed By Eavan Boland

This is dawn.
Believe me
This is your season, little daughter:
The moment daisies open,
The hour mercurial rainwater
Makes a mirror for sparrows.
It's time we drowned our sorrows.

I tiptoe in.
I lift you up
Wriggling
In your rosy, zipped sleeper.
Yes this is the hour
For the early bird and me
When finder is keeper.

I crook the bottle.
How you suckle!
This is the best I can be:
Housewife
To this nursery
Where you hold on,

Dear life.
A silt of milk.
The last suck.
And now your eyes are open
Birth-coloured and offended.
Earth wakes.
You go back to sleep.
The feed is ended.

Worms turn.
Stars go in.
Even the moon is losing face.
Poplars stilt for dawn
And we begin
The long fall from grace.
I tuck you in.

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork, and I have been involved in many Irish-related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and participate in the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia, and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless of whether people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

It expanded to an Irish Around The World group, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in, and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There have been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

Sign up here if you haven't joined yet and don't know what you are missing.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
