Hi there,

Here's your weekly dose of Irish for Friday, December 3rd 2021...

*Irish saying* - Through the storms of life, may the only thing brewing be your coffee

*Irish Fact* - I am sure you have heard of Ford. Well, did you know that Henry Ford's father, John Ford, was born near the town of Ballinascarthy, Cork? Incredibly the first factory outside of the USA was in Co. Cork. Henry Ford founded the company on 17 April 1917. This was the first factory Ford had purposely built outside of America anywhere else in the world. Source: The Henry Ford The most unique facts about Cork are that Henry Ford built the first ever factory in Co Cork outside of the US

It is 22 days until Christmas and 104 days until St Patrick's day.

  • It is incredible to see how fast the mood in the air changes at the start of December. I don't know about you, but it certainly feels more like Christmas from the beginning of December.
  • I wish you all a great weekend!
  • Last week Mel Gibson caused quite a bit of stir on Facebook as I started my Irish history section.
  • This week I found a great video from a 100-year-old Irish doctor from 1989. At the time, he was Europe's oldest practising doctor. He shares some great wisdom in the Video here.

This week's jokeπŸ˜‚:

Seamus O'Brien had been hailed as the most intelligent Irish man for three years running.

He had topped such shows as Larry Gogans 'Just a Minute Quiz' and 'Quicksilver'.

It was suggested by the Irish Mensa board that he should enter into the English Mastermind Championships. He did and won a place.

On the evening of the competition, Seamus walks on stage, sits down and makes himself comfortable.

The lights dim and a spotlight shines on his face. Magnus, the emcee, proceeds: "Seamus, what subject are you studying?" Seamus responds, "Irish history". "Very well," says Magnus, "your first question - in what year did the 'Easter Rising take place?" "Pass," says Seamus. "Okay," says Magnus,

"Who was the leader of the Easter Rising?" Seamus responds, "Pass."

"Well then," says Magnus, "how long did the Easter Rising last?"

Again, Seamus responds, "Pass."

Instantly, a voice from the audience shouts out: "Good man, Seamus - tell the English nothing..."

So what is this week's top Irish poem?

Down By The Sally Gardens, By W. B. Yeats

This week is a short but sweet poem from W.B Yeats. It is ranked number 78 in the top 100 Irish poems list.

This is one of Yeats earlier poems, and its success comes from the sorrow and regret that runs throughout the poem.

The "Salley Gardens" were said to be located on the banks of the river at Ballysadare in Sligo, where locals grew trees to produce roof thatching materials.

Many singers and ensembles have performed the poem, which is usually adapted to the music of "The Maids of Mourne Shore."

There is a huge list that you can find over on the Wikipedia page here.

Enjoy this great and short Irish poem by W. B Yeats

Down By the Salley Gardens

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Down by the salley gardens

   my love and I did meet;

She passed the salley gardens

   with little snow-white feet.

She bid me take love easy,

   as the leaves grow on the tree;

But I, being young and foolish,

   with her would not agree.

In a field by the river

my love and I did stand,

And on my leaning shoulder

   she laid her snow-white hand.

She bid me take life easy,

   as the grass grows on the weirs;

But I was young and foolish,

and now am full of tears.

That's it. I told you it was a short and sweet top Irish poem. Did you enjoy this poem?

About the founder of Irish Around The World:

Okay, some of you might be wondering.

Just who runs this Irish Around The World website??

Or maybe you don't care, haha.

My name is Stephen Palmer from Co. Cork and I have been involved in many Irish related projects over the years.

While it may seem this website is run by a whole team of highly skilled Irishmen, it is just run by myself.

So I want to thank you again for taking the time to subscribe and being a part of the community.

So how did you start a website about Irish people around the world Stephen?

image

Where it all began:

I created a website in 2013 to help Irish people who are moving to Australia and recently a new group to help Irish ex-pats who are returning to Ireland.

I have always enjoyed reading about Irish heritage and how connected Irish people are around the world.

But I felt that the websites out there did not connect the people to the information. Instead, they just published daily articles regardless if people cared about them or not.

So I decided to change it and create my own Facebook community called Irish Around The World.

It expanded to a group also called Irish Around The World, now with over 70k members!

Many of you have probably seen me popping in and out of our Facebook group has been amazing to see the interaction with each member.

There has been many ups and downs in the groups. Laughs and tears but every day, it continues to move forward. Thanks for being a part of it.

If you haven't joined yet, you don't know what you are missing, sign up here.

Thank you again for being a part of Irish Around The World.

Have a great day!

All the best,

Stephen Palmer
