A New Year’s Eve to Remember

December 31st was all set to be a night of celebration. My partner, Clare, and I had planned a wonderful evening at a local restaurant in Chelsea, ready to welcome the new year in style. But fate, as it often does, had other ideas.

The day began with a mild stomach ache—nothing too concerning, or so I thought. I chalked it up to the excesses of Christmas, convinced it would pass. By 5 PM, however, I was doubled over in pain, and instead of raising a glass to the new year, we found ourselves rushing to Chelsea & Westminster A&E. The pain was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. By 8 PM, the diagnosis was clear: acute appendicitis.

"But this only happens to young people," I naively thought as they wheeled me up to the ward. I was about to learn the hard way just how wrong I was.

The next day, things took a dramatic turn. My appendix ruptured, and suddenly, everything became urgent. Surgeons rushed me into the operating theatre, and for a moment, the new year felt like it might bring more than just fresh beginnings. Thankfully, the operation went well. Six days later—battered, bruised, and emotionally drained—I finally returned home, grateful for a second chance.

There are two important lessons from this experience. First, we Brits often take the NHS for granted. The dedication, skill, and sheer resilience of the overstretched doctors and nurses are nothing short of remarkable. A special thanks must go to Miriam, whose calm, efficient care gave me immense comfort during my most difficult moments. She’s been a nurse for twenty years, and when I asked her what she loved about her job, her answer was simple: "I love helping people."

The second lesson? Listen to your body. A twinge, a dull ache, a persistent discomfort—these are not things to ignore. If something feels off, get it checked out. Sooner rather than later.

And of course a massive amount of love and thanks to my partner Clare who was by my side throughout.

Now, a few kilos lighter but feeling almost back to full strength, I’m looking forward to making up for lost time. This slightly delayed newsletter marks my return, and I’m excited to welcome clients once again for both sensual massage treatments and classes and of course the first Couples Sensual Social on Saturday 25th January.
