June 2026
There has been a lot happening recently in the ketamine and psychedelic medicine space. This month, we're covering new research highlighting ketamine's rapid effects on suicidal ideation, growing momentum behind psychedelic research within the VA and other institutions, and a great podcast episode that covers some of the basics for those who are new to ketamine or Spravato.
Be sure to stay until the end, where we're turning the spotlight over to you for recommendations.
New to Ketamine or Spravato?
One of the most important first steps before beginning treatment is understanding what ketamine and Spravato are, how they work, and what to expect during treatment.
This podcast episode, although a few years old, provides an excellent introduction to the science behind ketamine, along with a powerful patient story. If you're curious about ketamine therapy or considering treatment, it's well worth a listen.
New Research on Ketamine and Suicidal Ideation
A newly published study in JAMA Psychiatry adds to the growing body of evidence supporting ketamine therapy’s ability to rapidly reduce suicidal ideation and severe depressive symptoms. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which may take weeks to work, ketamine can produce meaningful symptom improvement within hours to days for some patients.
Researchers believe ketamine’s unique effects on glutamate and neuroplasticity may help interrupt rigid depressive thought patterns and create a window for healing, particularly for individuals with treatment-resistant depression.
What's Next in Psychedelic Medicine?
While ketamine remains the only legally available psychedelic medicine for mental health treatment in most of the United States, research into other psychedelic therapies continues to accelerate.
The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced a new clinical trial studying MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans suffering from both PTSD and alcohol use disorder. The study will combine psychotherapy with MDMA or placebo and is part of the VA's growing investment in psychedelic research.
The VA is now participating in 20 psychedelic therapy trials nationwide and has also signaled increasing interest in researching ibogaine for conditions affecting veterans. During a recent hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, VA Secretary Doug Collins was asked about the department’s approach to psychedelic-assisted therapies. His response was straightforward: “If it helps a veteran, we’re going to look into it.”
Meanwhile, a newly published study found that a single dose of psilocybin, combined with psychotherapy, produced rapid antidepressant effects in people with major depressive disorder. More than half of participants receiving psilocybin were considered in remission six weeks later, with benefits persisting for several months.
While these treatments remain investigational and are not yet FDA-approved for routine clinical use, the growing body of research continues to highlight the potential role psychedelic medicines may play in the future of mental health care.

This Month, We’re Asking You for Recommendations
We’re doing things a little differently this month. Instead of sharing what we’ve been enjoying lately for mental health, wellness, and fun, we’d love to hear your recommendations instead.
We're looking for great massage therapists in San Luis Obispo County. At Innerbloom, we recognize that healing often involves multiple modalities, such as bodywork, psychotherapy, movement, and mindfulness practices, which can complement the work we do in the clinic.
If you know a massage therapist you love, simply reply to this email and tell us who they are and why you recommend them. We’re always looking to expand our local network of trusted practitioners.
And yes, I'm asking for myself, too. 😉

About Newy
A supplement formulated by Dr. Rivas for enhanced brain and mood support. The formula pairs especially well with ketamine therapy by helping extend and enhance the neuroplasticity effects. That said, the ingredients are equally effective on their own, so it’s a supportive option whether or not someone is undergoing ketamine treatment.
Thank You!
I appreciate your continued support and for taking the time to read! If you have questions, feedback, or topics you'd like to see covered, reply to this email. I would love to hear from you!
