Faith & Life Lessons – October 27, 2024

Welcome to the October 27th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week.

Family

That was my focus for this week. I took a 2-week holiday and I was committed to keeping my focus and time on my family.

About a month before my holidays, I informed my boss and the team leaders reporting to me.

It was my way of ensuring no one was caught in the “I didn’t know you were going on holiday” talk.

Add to that, I turned on my out-of-office notifications once I was on holiday.

This way, no one sends me an email expecting my response - I indicate the name of the person to whom all such emails should go during my absence.

This was the usual practice early in my career.

But somewhere along the lines of rising across the ranks and chasing never-ending deadlines, it became normal to expect to be available when on leave.

I’m reclaiming a bit of the old world order.

Yes, I make occasional check-ins on a collaborative project with a government agency that I am involved in because I can’t be completely hands-off.

But they also get my out-of-office response.

My goal remains - keeping a family focus.

Things I Learnt

1-God Provides in Transitions: On Sunday, my family had lunch with a couple of families. These families and friends have also had multiple country transitions.

They know what it means to pick up from one country and start all over again in a new country.

They understand the difficulties of doing these transitions with your children and the struggles of these young children.

During our conversations, a mother shared their family experience and the fears she had for one of her kids.

She concluded - “God had provided all they needed to help their child thrive.”

Her conclusion was a great reassurance for me.

Why?

Because I know that life transitions are part of the life that my family have lived through and would still live through.

The encouragement was one of God’s ways to keep my faith in Him growing.

2-Make New Plans Building on Old Ideas: During the week, I had to evaluate progress on a number of my goals.

I realised something else.

I had become distracted. Distracted by a shiny object.

I was banking my goals on a Hail Mary pass.

A Hail Mary pass that has burnt through some of the precious time I had.

Now I have to make up for this in the little time I have.

Lesson learned.

Postscript

May you never let the disappointments of unrealised plans stop you from making new plans. Amen
