Faith & Life Lessons – September 1, 2024

image

Welcome to the September 1st edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week.

My week was focused on one big thing.

At the beginning of the week, while listening to a sermon by the late Timothy Keller, I discovered something.

Actually one thing.

The one thing was this - I was expecting from my wife something I should have been expecting from God.

Only God can bring that to my attention.

I spent most of the week praying on this.

And I noticed something was happening as a result.

My heart was changing. I was becoming better in some areas I had been struggling with.

It was a case of “praying the right prayer to experience the change I have been wanting”.

A case of the Holy Spirit teaching me how to pray.

Little wonder the disciples asked Jesus “Teach us to pray”

I need to continuously create more opportunities for these sorts of prayer lessons.

Things I Learnt

1 - LIVING A LEARNING CULTURE: A few weeks back I spoke at an event in Lagos, Nigeria. Over the weekend, the convener called to speak with me.

The reason was interesting. They were doing a post-mortem on the event.

They wanted to know what I thought went well and what didn’t go well.

I was more than happy to do that.

After Action Reviews (AAR) on important activities are something that not everyone does.

Most people finish an event and move to the next one without learning from it.

Discover what went well and how to repeat it.

Identify what didn’t go well and plan on how to not let it happen the next time.

Doing this is something that will set the organizers of this event apart.

They will keep improving from event to event.

2 - MODELING A LIFE OR A PRACTICE: I happened in on a parent who was feeling very proud of her toddler.

He was probably 3 or 4 years old.

She was saying things like “he likes to lay hands on people to pray for them” and “sometimes he prays in tongues”

I smiled.

A part of me thinks that the kid is simply imitating practices that he has seen in church or on TV.

There are some aspects of life that I don’t think as parents we should just let our kids model without understanding.

Imitation is useless if there is no life to back it up with.

I prefer to build practices in children that they understand based on the level of life they are living.

No need to make hypocrites of the little children.

Postscript

May you live an examined life that keeps finding ways to become better every day. Amen
