Faith & Life Lessons - January 29, 2023

image

Welcome to the January 29th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

One of the things I didn't do in some areas of my life this year is set goals.

You probably wonder "why" since the usual quote is "if you don't aim for anything, you get nothing."

Well, for those areas, I decided to focus on habits.

Habits which reflect the type of person I want to be in these areas.

This past week, I started the first 66-day consistency practice for the first 2 habits.

To keep it vivid to me, I printed out a 66-day calendar in my room which I will mark off every day as I do the practice.

I am competing against myself.

And seeing that I mark off every day tells me that I am winning.

I am off to the races.

Things I Learnt

1-Get Support Against FOMO: I had a FOMO fight moment during the week. I had been part of a year-long training program which expires on January 31st.

I had reviewed the whole program and decided that while it served me well in the past 1 year, it was not relevant to me going forward.

In simple lingo, I was not going to renew.

Everything was going well until I got an email late in the week telling me about the benefits of renewing.

Add to that, they were offering a lifetime renewal i.e. pay once and never have to pay again.

And that was when my FOMO fight started.

Interestingly, I started having second thoughts about the possibilities of what a lifetime membership could offer.

Over the weekend, I decided to call in the cavalry.

I spoke with my coach.

I told him, "I'm having a FOMO moment but I know this is not going to give me the value I need for this season."

He didn't respond by saying yes or no.

He asked me about what I had defined as my highest priority and if staying in the program helps me achieve it.

Bam.

Problem solved.

I fought the FOMO and won.

Thanks to reinforcement.

2-When Talking Donkeys are Ignored: I read a post by someone who is in the training space online.

Someone had sent him a private message to say that even though he liked all his posts, he was getting underwhelmed by his pattern of always ending almost every story with a recommendation of a person or a business they offer.

He said he could not take that person seriously because the writer had 398 friends & 13 followers while he had over 40,000 followers. Second, he had not built a relationship with him before correcting him or had better results. His last point was that he was paid to advertise people's products for them and that's what he was doing.

In a simple summary, the writer was not saying anything of value to him.

One thing I told myself earlier in my Christian faith walk is this "if God can use a donkey to speak to the prophet, He can use anyone to speak the truth I need to me."

They may not come in the container I expect so I am always focused on the message, not the messenger.

I am not as popular as this guy but I hope whatever stage I find myself at, I am always open to hearing the truth.

Even from people who may not tick all the right boxes.

They are created by God.

God can use them to speak the truth to me.

I am listening, Lord.

Postscript

May your ears never be deaf to the corrections of people you consider lower than you. May you not forget that God can use anyone or anything, even a dumb donkey, to speak to a prophet Amen
