Faith & Life Lessons - November 5, 2023

image

Welcome to the November 5th edition of Faith & Life Lessons.

You will see this email full of tidbits from my week. My goal is simple. I hope that from how I live my life, you can find a thing or two that helps you as you try to live a life that matters. I am always trying to do one thing - make Christ-focused decisions in love, work, and life. And this was my week.

The Story of My Week

One of the things I got to do this week was evaluate the recent events I lived through.

I had my scheduled appointment with my coach for the week and he had thought I would reschedule since I was travelling.

I was committed to keeping it because I believe that experiences need to be evaluated as soon as possible.

I don't learn from my experiences.

Rather, I learn from my evaluated experiences - in the words of John Maxwell.

So, I evaluated with my coach.

From it, we developed practices and actions to align with my everyday life and future goals.

An experience is useless if it does not help me live better.

This is why I don't see success or failures - I see lessons to live life better.

And this latest experience is no exception.

It's now part of my toolkit for living better in the future.

Things I Learnt

1-Character Speaks More Than We Know: I met up with someone we haven't hung out with since I moved to Senegal. I liked his family and we talked about our careers.

Just before we moved, he told me that the company he was working at had just been acquired. Fortunately for him, he was one of the staff that had equity in the company.

His payout would mean that he could choose how he worked for the rest of his life.

I was so excited for him and his family.

Afterwards, he would update me about the progress of the negotiations. As expected, the new owners would need staff like him to stay on for a few more years before the full payout.

When we were reconnecting, I told him I was so excited for him and looking forward to the full vesting of his payout.

His response was pretty touching.

He said he knew I was someone without an iota of jealousy - that's why I was one of the first people he told about it.

Interestingly, he said that about me.

Later that evening, I met with an old colleague who had just started a coaching practice. During our conversation, I saw a few gaps that he could address to improve his business - I shared websites where he could get the resources.

Next, I asked if he would be open to speaking with my coach who could offer deeper insights. He was up for it.

My coach spent almost 2 hours with him on the phone at no cost.

I could now understand why the first guy said he didn't see a jealous streak in me.

I love to see the personal and professional success of the people around me

2-Lead Through A Team for Freedom: During the week, I had to be unavoidably away for a major event at my company.

The beauty of it all was that the team swam through it all with flying colours.

It made my strategy of leading collaboratively worth it all.

It means that everyone or someone in my leadership team was always part of any business decision or negotiation I was involved in.

This made it easy for someone on the ground to be able to provide updates on all of our key initiatives.

Collectively, the team had most of the information I would have provided as an individual.

In simple terms, I cloned my knowledge to the people I work with.

That's my way of giving myself freedom at work by not making myself the sole information & decision hub

Postscript

May you live with the wisdom to surround yourself with people who can share the burden of making great decisions with you. Amen.
