Goal Setting and Schools

Happy Friday!

I hope you all had a good and safe Thanksgiving. I attempted to smoke a turkey for the first time, and I have to say it came out pretty darn good! I'm still working through my list of turkey leftover recipes, so it'll be a while before I get to try again.

I've been giving more and more thought about the content I'm making and how I'm sharing it. Some of the articles below are my attempt to begin to shift how and what I write. I wrote, for example, a case study from a few years ago. I plan on writing a bunch more of them, but I need to try something first. I also wrote an article about how I approach consulting people on setting goals.

For you career folk I wrote an article that is likely going to touch a nerve with the people who read it. The folks who I give career coaching to inevitably bring up wanting to go back to school. I thought I'd address my thoughts on that subject. The bottom line is, if you're thinking school will make starting your career go better, it won't. There are a few exceptions to that rule, but if you have any questions or want to talk through it I'm happy to! Going back to school is a major decision!

We're wrapping up 2020. Holidays are coming, and then it will be 2021. Here are some questions to linger in your mind today:

As promised, here are the articles I wrote, enjoy!

Whether it is performance reviews, personal, strategic, or yearly, goal-setting is an important skill to develop.

I find myself often helping leaders articulate and shape theirs, and today I want to cover a few basics about them.

🗒️ The Emperor’s New Clothes

image

I was reading old fables to my kid a bit ago and read him The Emperors New Clothes.

Two things struck me at the end.

First, how little I remembered about the story, and second how strong of analogy it is for what I encounter as I consult in companies, and what I do to help everyone see the truth.
