The Growth Note | The Invisible Resume

Read it. Feel it. Do something with it.

────────────

Hey you,

You’ve probably spent time polishing a resume at some point.

Tweaking bullet points.

Choosing the right verbs.

Making sure it all sounds impressive.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

The resume that actually opens doors is the one you never submit.

You have two resumes.

One is the one you send out.

Titles. Experience. Achievements.

The other is the one people experience.

It’s written in how you follow up.

How you show up.

How you respond when things don’t go your way.

That second one?

That’s your invisible resume — and it’s the one that actually opens doors.

Early last year, I was helping form a new BNI Chapter. I was with this group every single week, running their 90-minute meeting and supporting them through the launch process.

Two personal injury attorneys were applying for the same seat in the Chapter.

Both qualified.

Both experienced.

On the second week, one of them pulled me aside after the meeting.

He started complimenting my energy. The way I presented myself. My vocabulary. The way I spoke to the room and connected with people — both on stage and one-on-one.

Then he asked me something I wasn’t expecting.

“Have you ever thought about being an attorney?”

I told him, “I’ve thought about it, but not seriously.”

He looked at me and said,

“If I could convince you to go to law school, I would pay for all of it — as long as you came to work for me for a few years afterward.”

I wasn’t pitching him.

I wasn’t selling anything.

I wasn’t asking for an opportunity.

That door opened because of my invisible resume — how I showed up consistently, how I communicated, and how I made people feel over time.

3 Truths About Your Invisible Resume

1. Consistency Speaks Louder Than Credentials

People don’t trust you because of what you say you can do.

They trust you because of what they’ve seen you do — repeatedly.

Showing up prepared.

Communicating clearly.

Following through when no one is watching.

That’s credibility.

2. Small Moments Are Always Being Counted

Most reputations aren’t built in big wins.

They’re built in ordinary moments.

The quick reply.

The honest answer.

The extra effort when it would’ve been easy to coast.

Those moments add up — quietly, relentlessly.

3. Your Reputation Travels Ahead of You

You don’t control what people say about you when you’re not in the room.

But you do control the inputs.

How you treat people.

How you communicate under pressure.

How you show up when there’s nothing in it for you.

Your invisible resume is being passed around long before you ever arrive.

2 Quotes to Reflect On

“Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking.” — J.C. Watts

“Reputation is built when you’re not trying to build it.” — Unknown

1 Stretch for the Week

Ask yourself one honest question:

If someone described working with me to a friend — what would they say?

Then choose one small behavior this week that strengthens that story.

Because you don’t get remembered for what you intend.

You get remembered for what you repeatedly do.

If this Growth Note resonated, forward it to someone whose quiet consistency you admire — or someone who’s building a reputation they’ll be proud of.

More soon — until then, speak boldly.
