The 5 People Every Independent Artist Needs

If you’re trying to do it all alone, you’re holding yourself back. Here’s who you need around you.

Hello

Being independent doesn’t mean doing everything by yourself.

It means building the right team around your vision — even if you’re just starting out.

Here are 5 key people every serious artist should have in their corner (even part-time or project-by-project):

1. 🎧 Producer (Creative Direction & Sound Identity)

Not just someone who sells you beats.

You need a producer who understands your tone, your vibe, your story — and helps you bring that to life in the music.

Real Example:

Ever notice how Travis Scott’s sound shifted when he locked in with Mike Dean? That wasn’t just gear — it was creative alignment.

2. 🎛 Mixing & Mastering Engineer (Final Polish)

This person makes your music sound like a record.

No matter how good your lyrics or beat are — if the mix is off, the track will feel amateur.

Tip: Send your song to 2 engineers and compare the clarity, depth, and energy. You'll feel the difference immediately.

3. 💼 Music Lawyer (Contracts & Ownership)

It’s not just for record deals.

A good music attorney can help you lock in your rights on splits, licenses, publishing, sync deals, and more.

Mistake to Avoid: Don’t wait until there's money involved to get your paperwork clean — get ahead of it.

4. 📈 Marketing Strategist / Coach (Visibility & Rollout)

This could be a mentor, content strategist, or just someone who's ahead of you on the journey.

They help you avoid shooting in the dark when it’s time to release.

Tip: Even a few DM convos with someone who’s released before can give you more direction than months of guessing.

5. 🎥 Visual Artist / Content Creator (Cover Art, Reels, Trailers)

In 2025, your visuals speak before your music plays.

Don’t sleep on presentation — it builds trust, tells your story, and gets people to press play.

Tip: Build a moodboard before your next release — even a free Canva layout — and send it to your visual collaborator. Helps you both get aligned.

You don’t need a full-time staff — just the right people on call for when it matters.

I work closely with independent artists on both the production and mixing side, helping shape a release that’s ready to compete.
