Dear Members of the Hurley Community, and Neighborhood Friends of the Hurley School,
Tonight, May 8th, our community was supposed to be gathered together, at TropiCaliente.
In ordinary times, we would be at the Ben Franklin Institute eating delicious food from El Centro, Orinoco, Masa, Barcelona, and other generous neighborhood restaurants, dancing to the amazing music of Groupo Fantasia, enjoying a Hurley Mule cocktail, and most importantly celebrating and honoring The Hurley School.
These clearly are not ordinary times, but the Hurley still deserves to be celebrated, and deserves our support. You still have an opportunity to help us accomplish that.
The Hurley, a bilingual, K-8 Boston Public School, located in the South End, is a Tier 1 school, and educates 350 children with a rigorous curriculum. Beyond educating its students, the school truly supports its family community. Our school serves a racially, ethnically, and economically diverse student population with over seventy percent of our students living in high poverty.
NPHS is committed to its mission of supporting the needs of the Hurley. This includes both meeting basic needs of its families, and providing resources to the school, like reading interventions and performing arts education that the Boston Public School budget does not cover.
We had hoped that we would be seeing you tonight, and that we could provide you with a fun evening. While we can’t do that, we still ask that you consider donating to NPHS.
The cost of a ticket to TropiCaliente is $150. Could you donate that?
We had planned a Fund a Need Paddle raise, to ask that you consider helping NPHS pay for vital needs. Can you raise your paddle, virtually?
$1,000 will provide for our students who need an extra level of support. NPHS funds literacy intervention sessions for students needing guided reading practice in English and Spanish, and provides materials for special education teachers and school therapists.
$500 will help cover the costs of providing materials and technology to ensure our students have what they need to succeed in the classroom.
$250 will build a fund for NPHS to invest in the Hurley schoolyard to promote safety, learning, and healthy play.
Professional Development$100 helps NPHS fund continuing education for our outstanding teachers.
$50 will help build performing arts programming at the Hurley. Next year, we hope to partner with Handel and Haydn to bring music curriculum to the Hurley. Past programming has included Urbanity dance, Urban Voices music lessons, and performances by Young Audiences of Massachusetts, whose mission, which states that “the arts are an essential component of both formal education and of youth development, and that all students, regardless of backgrounds, talents and abilities, deserve access to the rich educational opportunities inherent to arts learning,” explains why the funds raised tonight are so important.
We know that these are tough times for everyone, but we ask that you consider a gift to NPHS today in honor of TropiCaliente, and in honor of the amazing students and teachers of the Hurley School.
All the best,
Alicia Erickson, NPHS Co-President, [email protected]
