image

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) is up +0.09%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.01%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.35%. πŸ€‘

President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy will reconvene on Tuesday after seriously constructive staff-level talks over the weekend. 😞 Sadly, the May Empire manufacturing index fell to a 4-month low of -31.8, much weaker than expectations 😞.

Stocks Mixed as Hawkish Fed Comments Push Bond Yields Higher

image

πŸ’» US tech companies have been doing well in their recent quarterly earnings reports, beating expectations. However, this hasn't eased concerns about growth and valuations. The sustainability of the tech stock rally is uncertain. The Nasdaq 100 Stock Index has outperformed the S&P 500 since mid-April, but valuations are high.

GenTrust is cautious about the sector's outlook despite a "great" earnings season. Bank of America predicts a recession could impact credit and tech. πŸ˜•...

Nat-Gas Prices Jump as Active U.S. Nat-Gas Rigs Plunge

image

πŸ”₯ June nat-gas prices on Friday skyrocketed to a 1-1/2 week high and closed with a bang! 😱

🌑️ Above-normal U.S. temperatures have caused a surge in demand from electricity providers to power air-conditioning. According to BNEF data, gas demand for power generation is at its highest seasonal levels since at least 2014.

πŸ“ˆ The gains in nat-gas were further fueled Friday afternoon when Baker Hughes reported that the number of active U.S. nat-gas drilling rigs in the week ended May 12 plummeted by -16 to a 13-month low of 141 rigs. β›οΈπŸ“‰

Crude Prices Fall on a Stronger Dollar and Slump in U.S. Consumer Sentiment

image

πŸ“‰ This morning, June WTI crude oil (CLM23) is down -0.58 (-0.82%) and June RBOB gasoline (RBM23) is down -1.22 (-0.50%). However, June Nymex natural gas (NGM23) is up +0.033 (+1.51%). ❌ Crude oil and gasoline prices lost their early gains and are now moderately lower due to the rally in the dollar index to a 1-month high and a decline in U.S. consumer sentiment to a 6-month low. πŸ“ˆ Initially, crude oil prices increased due to concerns about tight global supplies as Iraqi crude exports of around 500,000

12th May, 2023: Scrap Gold, Silver and Platinum Prices Dropped on Index

image

πŸ’°πŸ“‰ Bad news for Hallmarked gold today πŸ˜”. Even 9 carat gold scrap saw a decrease of $7.71 per Oz 😒. Platinum scrap prices also took a hit, dropping by $2.91 per Oz to reach $815.89 per Oz 😞. And it's not just gold and platinum - silver scrap prices also closed on a low note at $20.48 per Oz, edging down by $0.52 per Oz 😩.

Tesla Stock Has Fallen, But Its Put Premiums Are Still High - Good For Short Income Plays

image

πŸš€πŸ“ˆ Tesla Inc (TSLA) stock has taken a dip of around $20 in the last month, which is about a 10.7% decrease, bringing the price down to $167.98 as of Friday, May 12.

2 Stocks Popping After Analyst Upgrades

image

πŸ’° Albemarle Corporation (NYSE:ALB) and DuPont de Nemours Inc (NYSE:DD) are both killing it this morning. Analysts upgraded these two stocks and they're both looking pretty healthy πŸ’ͺ

Baird upgraded ALB to "outperform" from "neutral" and raised its price target to $288 πŸ€‘ ALB is up 4.5% to trade at $204.53 and call traders are stoked πŸ“ˆ Meanwhile, DuPont de Nemours stock is up 2.3% to trade at $65.22, and Deutsche Bank gave it a big thumbs up πŸ‘ by upgrading it to "buy" from "hold." These are definitely two stocks to watch!

Option Volatility And Earnings Report For May 15 - 19

image

It's time for another round of earnings! πŸ€‘ We're already well into the season, but there are still some major players reporting this week: (HD) Home Depot, (WMT) Walmart, (TGT) Target, (CSCO) Cisco, (DE) Deere & Company, (AMAT)Applied Materials, and (FL) Foot Locker.

Before a company reports, implied volatility is usually high - 😬 the market is unsure how it will turn out. πŸ€” But fear not, speculators and hedgers are on the case!

They create a huge demand for options, which drives up implied volatility and option prices. πŸ’Έ It's all part of the game! 🎲

Why Arlo Technologies (ARLO) Could Be a Cynically Compelling Buy

image

πŸ’” Arlo reported a loss of $14.2 million in their first quarter, resulting in a loss of 16 cents per share. But wait, there's good news! After adjusting for stock option expense and non-recurring costs, earnings actually came out to 1 cent per share, beating Wall Street's expected loss of 7 cents. On top of that, Arlo brought in $111 million in revenue, surpassing the expected $94.71 million. πŸ’° For the upcoming quarter, Arlo is predicting per-share earnings between 1-7 cents, exceeding analysts' expected penny. πŸ€‘ And in even better news, Q2 revenue is projected to hit $105-115 million, much higher than the expected $102.5 million. πŸ™Œ

High Valuations a Concern for Tech Stocks

image

πŸ“ˆ The Nasdaq 100 Stock Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) has been performing exceptionally well, up nearly +2% since mid-April starting with Netflix's earnings season. This index has outpaced the S&P 500 ($SPX) (SPY), which has seen a decline of -0.7% over the same period. πŸ’°

The Nasdaq 100 has seen a remarkable growth of +22% this year, leading to high valuations of most technology stocks. However, GenTrust remains β€œvery cautious” about the future of the technology sector despite a successful earnings season, stating that "additional growth" is necessary to justify gains beyond current levels.
