Startup Rescue: Marketing Highway Robbery
Apr 29, 2020 1:32 am
"We got robbed!", exclaimed the founder.
Let me set some background texture here.
I flew out to meet with some ambitious startup founders to rescue their startup. As with any consultation, I begin with background questions to get a visual of their life up to the current moment.
I want to know everything you ever spent a dollar on. I want to know every campaign you ever executed. And I want to know your daily operations.
With that information I can tell you what you should continue doing and what you should stop doing based on previous experience of knowing what works and what doesn't.
In addition, with a monetary audit, I can tell you what was worth the moola and what wasn't.
So, the founder began, "We hired a marketing agency."
Everytime I hear a founder say those words I cringe. Especially when they are a new startup bootstrapping on a small budget.
"How much did this agency cost you?"
"20 thousands dollars", the founder stated. And when he saw the cringe on my face he screamed, "We got robbed!"
But all is not lost yet because for $20k, maybe they gave him something great. So, I asked, "What did you get for that?"
"Not much. A shitty website, advice, and a little bit of help on a kickstarter program. And they ran some ads."
"Ads, huh?", I responded cringing some more.
That's the scam most agencies pull. They take your money and give it to Facebook and Google. They gamble with your money.
Here's the general rule for running ads...
Get your first 100 customers organically. And when the word of mouth social proof becomes fairly frequent, begin to spend on your brand.
This brand I was working with, didn't even have a product developed yet. And this marketing agency robbed them deaf...saw them coming a kilometer away. Easy scam!
An honest agency would analyze your startup and tell you, "You're not ready for us".
But most agencies don't care about your well being. They only care about their wallets.
So, $20k down the drain, and now the startup has depleted their piggy bank.
Another broke startup to rescue because another guy ruined them, almost as bad as Carole Baskin.
It's like the ecomm guys who sell courses but don't tell their students that they're going to need $5k minimum to get the ball rolling with some steam.
