Update on what's happening with Homeschooling in South Africa
Jun 28, 2023 1:30 pm
Hi there,
It's been a busy first half of the year! How are you doing on your side? Just a side note from me - My husband and I work together in his event lighting business and the warmer months are our busiest. So my year started super busy while juggling homeschooling as well! Although I may not be very active with the newsletters during these months, I am available throughout the year if you need to schedule a chat. Feel free to reach out if you need some homeschooling assistance. If you are brand new to homeschooling, my Homeschool Planner may be of interest to you - just to give you a helping hand with prompts and guidance.
South Africa has been all abuzz with the BELA Bill. You can get a description of what happened at the recent public hearings for each province HERE.
Before getting further into this, just some updates from my side:
- I've recently started my channel on YouTube HOMESCHOOL WITH ANGELA and will be focusing on foundation phase homeschooling as well as how to start homeschooling AND keep going. If you have a question that you'd like me to cover in the Q&A's, please feel free to click HERE and ask your question.
- CambriLearn has good news for CAPS users! If you aren't familiar with them, they offer online homeschooling with flexibility in that you can mix 'n match curricula and subjects. They also have different packages to suit your pocket. You can read more about my recommendations for online schooling and foundation phase HERE.
Now, they have a fixed Rand pricing for CAPS:
1. No more uncertainty about what the price is in Rands
2. No more worrying about whether the exchange rate will worsen and cause the monthly fees to increase
3. Now people know exactly what their debit order will be each month if they want to pay monthly
- If you are interested in or using an international homeschooling curriculum, you may still catch a SALE this time of year. Many providers either have it at this time or a "Back to School" special - so keep your eyes open for that! Sales on now: Harbor and Sprout birthday special of 25% off until 30 June.Use discount code CELEBRATE, ABCmouse annual sale 70% off!
Back to South Africa Homeschooling News. If you are not sure what the Bill is all about and the implications it has on education in South Africa, including homeschooling, it has been broken up, clause by clause, and easy to understand. Click HERE.
Where are we now?
"The PCBE will now discuss the BELA bill clause by clause. They might propose changes to the bill and this will then be submitted to the National Assembly. After that, the bill will follow a similar process when going through the National Council of Provinces.
The public should be able to participate again during this round. Probably by writing submissions. Please note that there might also be another round of public hearings when the bill is handled in the National Council of Provinces.
Furthermore, there might be other campaigns needed to approach MP's directly when the bill is submitted to the National Assembly.
So this is by no means the end. To win political battles requires extreme tenacity." From Pestalozzi Trust
Hope this helps. Each province has a WhatsApp group. For the specific links, please contact the Pestalozzi Trust directly. These groups are a good way to stay informed.
Happy Homeschooling in Rest.
Warm regards
Angela
