Discipleship Should Not Take a Vacation

Summer is here in all its sticky, sun-soaked glory. And if your days are anything like ours, they’re full of sunscreen, popsicles, and chaotic flexibility. The school schedule may be on pause, but our calling to train our children in the Lord never clocks out.

Discipleship doesn’t need to look the same in every season. In fact, summer gives us a beautiful chance to shake things up a bit, and keep the heart of worship alive in fresh, joy-filled ways.

Here are a few simple, “outside-the-box” ideas we’ve been loving lately for summer family worship:

🧺 1. Backyard Breakfast & Bible

Trade the dining table for the patio or picnic blanket. Grab a simple breakfast (muffins and fruit will do) and bring your Bible along. Read a passage while birds chirp and little feet swing. Summer mornings are made for gentle discipleship.

🎨 Sidewalk Scripture

Give your kids some chalk and have them write out a Bible verse on the driveway. Talk about what it means while you eat popsicles on the porch together. When you're done, hose it down while the kids splash and play!

🎣 2. Lakeside Lessons (or Beachside Bible Time)

Heading to the lake or beach? Tuck a small devotional or Psalm into your bag. Read it aloud while the kids snack or rest under the umbrella.

✨ 4. Stargazing & Scripture

Spread a blanket in the yard one warm night and look up at the stars. Read from Psalm 8 or Genesis 1 and talk about God’s glory in the heavens. Listening to worship music would be awesome too!

None of this needs to be perfect. It just needs to be present. The goal isn’t to replicate your school-year schedule, it’s to stay connected to the Vine.

So this summer, let’s trade guilt for grace and routine for relationship. Keep sowing those gospel seeds in creative ways. Your faithful presence speaks volumes.
