SUPER RARE ANIMATION SCREENING and much more...
Hi ,
Welcome to the 2nd LOS ANGELES ANIMATION FESTIVAL Newsletter. If you haven't already, don't forget to submit your latest film or script to us through FILMFREEWAY as we have regular pricing for another 2 months. And remember to put LAAF 2024, Dec 7-8 in your calendar.
So without further ado, on with the show…
SUPER RARE FILMS ON SUPER 8mm in AUG
We're really excited to announce we're working with the SOHO CINEMA CLUB here in LA, to screen several incredibly rare animated classics as part of their opening night event. The SOHO CINEMA CLUB will screen film only, in this case Super 8mm, and is a collaboration between LAAF and our sister festival HOLLYWOOD HORRORFEST.
The opening night event will be a smorgasbord of classic animation and live-action shorts, commercials, openings, promos and digest features, all Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy themed. Many of which haven't been screened in a cinema for decades. So don't miss your chance to see these amazing rarities on the BIG SCREEN.
Included in the over 2 hour program is TIM BURTON'S amazing stop-motion short VINCENT (1982), made while he was working as a concept artist at Disney. This stop-motion classic simply has to be seen on the big screen, projected on film, the way it was always intended.
We're also screening the hysterically funny (and way ahead of its time) BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA (1969). Surely this one influenced TERRY GILLIAM and the MONTY PYTHON team. MARV NEWLAND'S deceptively simple concept is a gag that never fails to be a massive crowd pleaser. So see it with an audience, it's the only way to appreciate this masterpiece. It's a film that's so good the Academy Film Archive preserved it in 2009.
We're especially excited to be screening the rare cinema promo for the musical album WAR OF THE WORLDS (1978) designed/directed by MICK HAGGERTY and C.D. TAYLOR, of NeoPlastic Productions in Los Angeles. These guys were specialists in the burgeoning field of computer animation and design. And later created the innovative trailer for Disney's BLACK HOLE (1979). A must see.
Celebrating the artistry of legendary stop-motion animator/producer/director RAY HARRYHAUSEN we'll also be screening a highlight digest reel of his classic EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS (1956), an early example of RAY'S epic animation skills. If you've never seen this before it's highly recommended.
Throughout the program we'll also be screening countless animated cinema commercials from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Many rarely ever screened these days. And all projected in glorious Super 8mm film.
The entire 2 hour program will be spliced together by hand and projected in two 1 hour blocks. There'll be a short break, with live entertainment (yes, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT!!!) from the internationally renowned INTERMISSION MAGICIAN, with his show of visual illusions and mentalist magic. See a man shrink before your very eyes! Then see him grow to gigantic proportions! It's a blast, we promise you. Plus there'll be snacks, drinks and merch on sale from the cinema's own usherettes. We'll have special guests (TBA) and a free raffle. It's like cinema-going used to be - only better.
Seating is very limited (as this is a cosy, boutique theatre), so do buy your tickets in advance for this very special opening night event.

BIG SCREEN ROUND UP - LOS ANGELES
LA has so many great cinemas and a constant flow of repertory screenings. Here are four great animated classics that are playing throughout July on the BIG SCREEN. Click on the artwork for full details.
LAAF FILM DISTRIBUTION
We firmly believe in all our festival entrants and winners. So much so that we began a film distribution arm of LAAF - releasing shorts and features on Blu-ray, DVD, Theatrically and Streaming through FILMFEST DISTRIBUTION.
This month let's celebrate one of the greatest animated anime epics made outside of Japan, the Iranian classic THE LAST FICTION. Currently streaming for FREE on TUBI. Catch it while you can. Click on the image below to watch. Your viewing supports everything we do at LAAF.
An action-packed fantasy tale, in the style of GAME OF THRONES and LORD OF THE RINGS, of five warriors in a time of myths and monsters. One has made a Faustian pact with Evil to seize the throne, the others are fated to save the Kingdom from eternal darkness - but not before they must first conquer their own inner demons. A stunning, internationally celebrated animated motion picture, based on the thousand-year-old Persian classic THE BOOK OF KINGS.
